| Description : | Carl Reiner directed this sweet comedy about the Man Upstairs visiting Earth in the form of a funny little guy (George Burns). John Denver is the good man chosen to be God's contact in the modern age--and like an Old Testament prophet, Denver's character pays the price by being ridiculed and faced with criminal charges. Denver is a warm presence, but the film is entirely in Burns's court. Reiner feeds him lines that come out of Burns' mouth like stage patter, and it's no wonder he got a huge career boost from this film in the winter of his life. Except for some courtroom stuff in the third act--where Reiner inadvertently cheapens the movie with editing tricks to suggest "miracles"--Oh, God! is just fine. (It's certainly better than its two perfunctory sequels, Oh God! Book II and Oh God! You Devil.) --Tom Keogh |

| Description : | After scoring popular hits with When Worlds Collide and The War of the Worlds, special-effects pioneer George Pal returned to the visionary fiction of H.G. Wells to produce and direct this science-fiction classic from 1960. Wells's imaginative tale of time travel was published in 1895 and the movie is set in approximately the same period with Rod Taylor as a scientist whose magnificent time machine allows him to leap backward and forward in the annals of history. His adventures take him far into the future, where a meek and ineffectual race known as the Eloi have been forced to hide from the brutally monstrous Morlocks. As Taylor tests his daring invention, Oscar-winning special effects show us what the scientist sees: a cavalcade of sights and sounds as he races through time at varying speeds, from lava flows of ancient earth to the rise and fall of a towering future metropolis. The movie's charm lies in its Victorian setting and the awe and wonder that carries over from Wells's classic story. The pioneering spirit of the movie is still enthralling, but it gets a bit silly when Taylor turns into a stock hero, rescuing a beautiful blonde Eloi (Yvette Mimieux) and battling with the chubby green Morlocks whose light-bulb eyes blink out when they die. Although it's quaint when compared to the special-effects marvels of the digital age, the movie's still highly entertaining and filled with a timeless sense of wonder. --Jeff Shannon |
| Reviews : { Rating: 4.5 out of 5 } | A True Classic A thousand times better than the recent remake. Don't bother with that one. This is the definitive movie. I watched this with my 22 year old daughter who is studying animation. She agreed with me that George Pal's 1960 animation was as good as anything in the new version. The story was far better presented. and the additional 30 minute special feature with brings Rod Taylor and Alan Young back together again 30+ years later was far more enjoyable than most 'making of' features. |

| Description : | One of the cinema's great disappearing acts came to a close with the release of The Thin Red Line in late 1998. Terrence Malick, the cryptic recluse who withdrew from Hollywood visibility after the release of his visually enthralling masterpiece Days of Heaven (1978), returned to the director's chair after a 20-year coffee break. Malick's comeback vehicle is a fascinating choice: a wide-ranging adaptation of a World War II novel (filmed once before, in 1964) by James Jones. The battle for Guadalcanal Island gives Malick an opportunity to explore nothing less than the nature of life, death, God, and courage. Let that be a warning to anyone expecting a conventional war flick; Malick proves himself quite capable of mounting an exciting action sequence, but he's just as likely to meander into pure philosophical noodling--or simply let the camera contemplate the first steps of a newly birthed tropical bird, the sinister skulk of a crocodile. This is not especially an actors' movie--some faces go by so quickly they barely register--but the standouts are bold: Nick Nolte as a career-minded colonel, Elias Koteas as a deeply spiritual captain who tries to protect his men, Ben Chaplin as a G.I. haunted by lyrical memories of his wife. The backbone of the film is the ongoing discussion between a wry sergeant (Sean Penn) and an ethereal, almost holy private (newcomer Jim Caviezel). The picture's sprawl may be a result of Malick's method of "finding" a film during shooting and editing, and in some ways The Thin Red Line seems vaguely, intriguingly incomplete. Yet it casts a spell like almost nothing else of its time, and Malick's visionary images are a challenge and a signpost to the rest of his filmmaking generation. --Robert Horton |
| Reviews : { Rating: 3.5 out of 5 } | A More cerebral war movie Is this movie superior to the vastly popular Saving Private Ryan? It's like comparing night and day. I like both movies on their own merits, it is unfortunate this got released a few month after SPR, and went unnoticed... this movie is pure cinematic poetry caught on film. It's a very layered film dealing with such topics as life, death, duality of man, what is right, what is wrong, who is right who is wrong, why do we do horrible things to other human beings, what is war, why is it hell. What is the thin red line? Is it that line delicately balancing sanity, insanity, life and death, morality, immorality, isolation/ companionship. That war corrupts the mind, the soul and ultimately nature. Each character shares their thoughts throughout the film. A war film that addresses these issues, where SPR went down the other road, a war movie strictly using "men on a mission" technique, American Patriotism with a hint of war is futile. There are some very breath taking scenes, the way Malick captures the land scape, where the clouds disperse and sun light bathes a quiet, tranquil field then all of a sudden gun fire crackles, mortars go off, U.S. soldiers charging an unseen enemy. You see G.I. Helmets immersed in the tall grass as they disappear among the green. A young baby bird dying, trying to crawl up a muddy embankment, a metaphor on how futile war is, when a crocodile is captured by soldiers, shows that even a top predator in the food chain is also vulnerable and cannot escape. This is where the conflict in man vs nature comes in. The acting is top notch, from Sean Penn, Nick Nolte, Jim Caviezel, John Cusack, and some bit roles by John Travolta, George Clooney, Woody Harrelson, Jared Leto, All of them I think didn't care about their screen time they just wanted to work with a great director who just took a 20 something year hiatus from film making, after directing Days of Heaven in '78 I believe and came back with this tour de force. I have even heard that Malick had a 6 hour movie that had to be trimmed down and actors Bill Pullman, Gary Oldman, Mickey Rourke had shot scenes but ultimately got cut and left on the editing floor. I've seen this movie a half dozen times or so and I am still awed by it, the photography, the music, it's a beautiful film indeed with such deep themes of the human mind and spirit. Please check out The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, I believe another movie that is poetic like and thought provoking and beautiful. |

| Description : | When the 2-inch-tall Tom Thumb arrives at a childless couple's door, it seems like the perfect family has been created. But a chance meeting with a pair of devious robbers soon has Tom acting as an unwitting accomplice in a robbery, thereby threatening his family's happiness. Only Tom (Russ Tamblyn of West Side Story) and his friend Woody (Alan Young) can prove the innocence of Tom's parents and bring the robbers to justice. This 1958 presentation of the classic Brothers Grimm fairytale won an Oscar® for its innovative special effects. Timeless scenes include the famous dancing shoes and the painted boy who peels himself off of a pad of paper to dance around the room. Peggy Lee and Fred Spielman provide a wealth of catchy songs that have Tamblyn, Young, and Peter Sellers singing, dancing, and performing impressive gymnastic feats. This fanciful tale will appeal to the entire family. --Tami Horiuchi |
| Reviews : { Rating: 4.5 out of 5 } | enchanting family classic I remember this classic quite vividly from my childhood - it's a real treat to finally be able to see it again on DVD. In TOM THUMB (1958), the special-effects wizardry of George Pal, the outstanding talents of Russ Tamblyn, and the whimsical music of Peggy Lee come together to create a spellbinding story for the young and the young in heart. A childless couple (Bernard Miles and Jessie Matthews) are blessed with a tiny, thumb-sized son, when they are given three wishes by the beautiful and kindly Forest Queen (June Thorburn). Little Tom Thumb (Russ Tamblyn) turns out to be quite a handful indeed, leading the whole town on a merry dance in his enchanted shoes; but later falls into the clutches of two merciless crooks (Terry-Thomas and Peter Sellers), who exploit Tom by making him participate in a robbery, for which his parents are ultimately blamed. Tom and his friend Woody (Alan Young) - who also hides a yen for the lovely Forest Queen - must race against time to catch the real villains, and save Tom's parents in the process. A real charmer. TOM THUMB springs to life with music, colour and merriment to spare. Russ Tamblyn is a little dynamo in the title role, displaying his amazing gymnast skills in some fantastic dance numbers ("tom thumb's Tune", "Talented Shoes"). George Pal's legendary stop-motion Puppetoons make several appearances (who could ever forget the Yawning Man?), and the strong chemistry of June Thorburn and Alan Young helps the romantic portion of the story become one of it's most memorable components. The DVD includes both widescreen and full-frame versions of the movie, plus the trailer. |

| Reviews : { Rating: 5.0 out of 5 } | An Excellent Documentary "Plisetskaya Dances" (black and white, 1964) is an excellent documentary about the famous Bolshoi ballerina, Maya Plisetskaya. "'Plisetskaya has a rare combination of natural gifts: broad leaps; light, soaring jumps; a lithe and supple body; wonderful arms; but all this is not enough for a ballerina's success,' said the famous Ballet Master, Jean George Naverre. 'The language of ballet can only be understood,' he asserted, 'when the heart commands it to speak.'" This is a nice summing up of her talents, but she is also a nice "turner," as well. In the last couple of decades, there has been a tendency toward extremely thin ballerinas. Maya has a much different build. She is trim, but she carries more natural weight than most of today's super-waifs. There has also been a recent preference for long-legged dancers, but Maya has shorter limbs. Maya has good leg extension, but not great. She does, however, have a very flexible back. So, she doesn't have the "look" that we have become accustomed to, but it can be refreshing to watch a natural, normal looking girl dance and not worry about whether she has an eating disorder. This documentary talks about Maya's childhood and her family. Her mother was a film actress, and Maya inherited her good looks. There are film excerpts of Maya training at the Bolshoi Ballet School. Maya's uncle, Asaf Messerer (1903-1992), was also a famous Bolshoi dancer, and there are some shots of Asaf instructing Maya in his dance class. Later on, the tape shows Maya's husband, Rodion Shchedrin, a composer who dedicated some of his ballet scores to her. Throughout her life, Maya has been surrounded by family members who are in the performing arts. This tape gives you a nice sense of her preparation for a ballet. Maya's dancing has been influenced by her own study of art and sculpture. It shows her meeting with a conductor to discuss the intricacies of a musical score. In my opinion, her theatrical abilities are more refined than most dancers, and her mother may have influenced this somewhat. There are some rehearsal excerpts of Maya training with distinguished ballet teachers and tutors. Maya has very nice arms and hands, and there is an interesting interview with her about it. There are many performance excerpts on this tape, and these artistic touches can be found throughout in her dancing. The commentator states, "Maya Plisetskaya performs a wide range of roles, and in each, she is the same superb ballerina who masterfully combines pure classical tradition with a keen sense of our time." Here is a list of the dance excerpts on this tape: a complete performance of "The Dying Swan" by Camille Saint-Saens; performance excerpts from acts two and three of "Swan Lake" by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky; rehearsal and performance excerpts from "The Sleeping Beauty" by Tchaikovsky; performance excerpts from "Laurencia" by Alexander Krein; performance excerpts from "Spartacus" by Aram Khachaturian; performance excerpts from "The Little Humpbacked Horse" by Rodion Shchedrin; performance excerpts from "Khovanshchina" by Modest Mussorgsky; a short film excerpt from "Raymonda" by Alexander Glazunov; performance excerpts from "The Stone Flower" by Serge Prokofiev; rehearsal and performance excerpts from "Romeo and Juliet" by Serge Prokofiev; performance excerpts from a Charles Gounod piece; and performance excerpts from "Don Quixote" by Ludwig Minkus. The excerpts give you a clear idea of her technical and theatrical abilities. There isn't room to discuss all of the excerpts, but a few comments are in order. The "Swan Lake" excerpts will give you a feel for her full length "Swan Lake" (1957) from Kultur Video that is also available on Amazon.com. I enjoy that video very much. "Laurencia" and "Don Quixote" are bold, Spanish numbers, and in them she does some high-energy bucking jumps, with arched back and hands thrown way back. It is interesting to compare Plisetskaya's "Romeo and Juliet" excerpts with the Royal Ballet's 1966 version with Margot Fonteyn, as each ballerina has different strengths and weaknesses. The excerpts from the Gounod piece are very charming; I really enjoy watching Maya dance these type of fast numbers, because she has so much flair. While rehearsing for "The Sleeping Beauty," Maya did a couple of seven revolution supported pirouettes, but she played it safe and only did four in the actual performance. If you enjoy watching ballerinas soar through the air, then you will like this tape. I enjoy the slow motion camera effects on her grand jetes and tour-jetes during rehearsal, as I frequently stop my tapes and re-watch jumps at one-fifth speed. Maya has a lot to offer, and that's why her tapes continue to sell after all these years. Maya was born in 1925, and her career continued after this documentary was made in 1964. She has maintained her good figure, and you can still see her dancing "The Dying Swan" in her late sixties on "Essential Ballet: Stars of the Russian Ballet." "Plisetskaya Dances" is an excellent documentary that was thoughtfully made. I have watched it a number of times, and I come to appreciate more of its details each time I watch it. In conclusion, I am glad to have this tape in my video library. The tape says that "[Maya Plisetskaya] believes that the language of Russian classical ballet, inspired and melodious, endlessly renewed, brings joy to people," and I agree. |

| Description : | While this documentary is a representation of the 1973 Formula 1 season and was released in 1974, it's disturbing that graphic footage of Tom Pryce's horrifying accident at the 1977 South African Grand Prix was included. It was probably included to make an extra dollar, but really had no reason being there as it had nothing to do with the 1973 season (Pryce wasn't even driving in F1 at the time). Aside from that, it's a good and gripping documentary about the racers, races and season in general. There is more graphic footage of the Roger Williamson crash, where he was killed and Clay Regazzoni's crash (he survived), but the interviews with Francois Cevert are good. Summary written by Ken S. |
