Description : Carl Reiner directed this sweet comedy about the Man Upstairs visiting Earth in the form of a funny little guy (George Burns). John Denver is the good man chosen to be God's contact in the modern age--and like an Old Testament prophet, Denver's character pays the price by being ridiculed and faced with criminal charges. Denver is a warm presence, but the film is entirely in Burns's court. Reiner feeds him lines that come out of Burns' mouth like stage patter, and it's no wonder he got a huge career boost from this film in the winter of his life. Except for some courtroom stuff in the third act--where Reiner inadvertently cheapens the movie with editing tricks to suggest "miracles"--Oh, God! is just fine. (It's certainly better than its two perfunctory sequels, Oh God! Book II and Oh God! You Devil.) --Tom Keogh

George Burns as "God".
This is a wonderful family film for all ages from 0 to 100. Seniors will enjoy this film as well. Oh God! is brought to you by Jerry Weintraub and Carl Reiner.
Jerry (John Denver) works at a grocery store. When he gets home to his wife, Bobbie, (Teri Garr) and kids (Moosie Drier, Rachel Longaker), he received in the mail an invitation from God to meet him at said place in Room 2700 at 11:00am.
In a leaf of lettuce, he finds another note from God.
He goes all the way to the 27th floor, opens the door to 2700 and sees an intercom and a chair. God is speaking to him, but reminds him He can't be seen. Later, he speaks to Jerry over the car radio that he wants Jerry to spread the word that God is alive.
Jerry tries to convience his wife, but she is doubtful that her husband has heard God. Later that evening, while Jerry is in the shower, God speaks to him again.
God wants Jerry to come out of the shower, but says he is naked. God says, "You think I don't know what you got?" Jerry comes out of the shower and its God in person (George Burns). The movie continues to be really cute.

Also in the cast: George Furth, newscaster Jerry Dunphy, Mario Machado, William Daniels, Carl Reiner, Dinah Shore, Zane Buzby, Barry Sullivan, Jeff Corey, Donald Pleasence, Barnard Hughes, Ralph Bellamy, David Ogden Stiers, Titos Vandis.

George Burns was 80/81 when he did this film and he lived to be 100 + 49 days passing March 8, 1996. In 1983, George Burns wrote the book, How to Live to Be 100, and he certainly proved it right.
John Denver was a popular, wholesome folk singer and songwriter. He was 32/33 when he did this film. He died unexpectedly October 12, 1997 when his experimental Long-EZ aircraft he was piloting crashed. He was 53.

DVD is in watchable wide-screen. Audio commentary in "Special Features" includes Teri Garr, Jerry Weintraub, Carl Reiner, Larry Gelbart.

Followed by the sequels all with George Burns as "God":
Oh God! Book II (1980)
Oh, God! You Devil (1984)

Update: They might bring back "Oh God!" in 2012, this time with Betty White. Jerry Weintraub is returning as producer with R.J. Louis.

Description : One of the cinema's great disappearing acts came to a close with the release of The Thin Red Line in late 1998. Terrence Malick, the cryptic recluse who withdrew from Hollywood visibility after the release of his visually enthralling masterpiece Days of Heaven (1978), returned to the director's chair after a 20-year coffee break. Malick's comeback vehicle is a fascinating choice: a wide-ranging adaptation of a World War II novel (filmed once before, in 1964) by James Jones. The battle for Guadalcanal Island gives Malick an opportunity to explore nothing less than the nature of life, death, God, and courage. Let that be a warning to anyone expecting a conventional war flick; Malick proves himself quite capable of mounting an exciting action sequence, but he's just as likely to meander into pure philosophical noodling--or simply let the camera contemplate the first steps of a newly birthed tropical bird, the sinister skulk of a crocodile. This is not especially an actors' movie--some faces go by so quickly they barely register--but the standouts are bold: Nick Nolte as a career-minded colonel, Elias Koteas as a deeply spiritual captain who tries to protect his men, Ben Chaplin as a G.I. haunted by lyrical memories of his wife. The backbone of the film is the ongoing discussion between a wry sergeant (Sean Penn) and an ethereal, almost holy private (newcomer Jim Caviezel). The picture's sprawl may be a result of Malick's method of "finding" a film during shooting and editing, and in some ways The Thin Red Line seems vaguely, intriguingly incomplete. Yet it casts a spell like almost nothing else of its time, and Malick's visionary images are a challenge and a signpost to the rest of his filmmaking generation. --Robert Horton

Quality Product - Decent Film
The film came is quality packaging and looked as if it was manufactured the day before.

Quality product.

The film itself it mediocre as best. Many inaccurate portrayls of war. Also very slow paced. Do not expect a 'Saving Private Ryan'.

I will say the cast is excellent, and it is entertaining to see so many A list actors in once film, also be prepared for some cameo's from other big actors.

For the price - I paid 5$, it's well worth it.

Thanks for reading.

Description : This is a "must have" video. It documents the last Isle of Man TT rode by "Yer Maun", the late, great, incredible Joey Dunlop. Throw in a fierce battle with TT rider David Jefferies, a handful of other famous TT riders, the wild and crazy sidecar races and even a peek at some vintage TT bikes and there's no question that this one should be in the library of every motorcycle racing fan. The yearly Isle of Man TT video compilations are produced by Duke after every TT, and certainly no one knew that the year 2000 would mark Dunlop's last race. In fact, it's only mentioned by way of a brief memorial at the end of the video, which was produced in the summer of 2000. Dunlop was 48 years old in 2000 when this video was filmed. Think about that for a second. Then think about the absolute unforgiving brutality of the Isle of Man TT race course. It really is awe inspiring. But that's not all. Dunlop went into the 2000 TT races with, believe it or not, a total of 23 TT victories. He scored a "hat trick" in 2000 by winning an incredible 3 more class races, which are all featured in the video, bringing his lifetime total to 26. Seeing that alone is worth the price of the tape. But the victories didn't come easy; he battled every step of the way with David Jefferies, yet another fantastic TT racer who lost his life on the course in 2003. The Isle of Man TT course is currently 37.73 miles long, and 3 to 6 laps are run for a maximum distance of 226.38 miles. Pit stops and tire changes are the norm and can sometimes make or break a rider, and breakdowns are relatively frequent. The Isle of Yer Maun video covers it all in Duke's "long review" format. It's about 2.5 hours of pure TT enjoyment, covering several classes. It includes great on-board camera shots, "kerb cams", aerial footage and interviews before and after the races. There are also segments on sidecar racing, "Mad Sunday" festivities, the Red Arrows aerial acrobatic team and more.

Description : Just a quick nap and weary stock analyst Nick Halloway is sure he'll emerge good as new. Instead, he wakes up good as gone. Vanished. Poof. Thin air. A nuclear accident has made Nick invisbile.

The laughs and visual effects are out of sight when Chevy Chase headlines Memoirs of an Invisible Man. Invisibility makes it easier to spy on agents (particularly chief adversary Sam Neill) who've put him in his predicament. And he can romance a lovely documentary producer (Daryl Hannah) in a way she's never "seen" before. John Carpenter (Halloween, Starman) directs and the Industrial Light and Magic dream weavers conjure up eye-opening effects as Nick embarks on his manic quest. Seeing is believing. And enjoying.

"Great Sci-Fi Thriller!"
Chevy Chase, Daryl Hannah and Sam Neill star in John Carpenter's 1992
sci-fi thriller. A businessman becomes invisible after he's in an accident.
I've always liked this film and notice it's the only one of John's where
his name isn't above or before the title. This dvd has good picture and
sound plus a couple neat extras. I recommend this great film.

But a chance meeting with a pair of devious robbers soon has Tom acting as an unwitting accomplice in a robbery, thereby threatening his family's happiness. Only Tom (Russ Tamblyn of West Side Story) and his friend Woody (Alan Young) can prove the innocence of Tom's parents and bring the robbers to justice. This 1958 presentation of the classic Brothers Grimm fairytale won an Oscar® for its innovative special effects. Timeless scenes include the famous dancing shoes and the painted boy who peels himself off of a pad of paper to dance around the room. Peggy Lee and Fred Spielman provide a wealth of catchy songs that have Tamblyn, Young, and Peter Sellers singing, dancing, and performing impressive gymnastic feats. This fanciful tale will appeal to the entire family. --Tami Horiuchi

Description : After scoring popular hits with When Worlds Collide and The War of the Worlds, special-effects pioneer George Pal returned to the visionary fiction of H.G. Wells to produce and direct this science-fiction classic from 1960. Wells's imaginative tale of time travel was published in 1895 and the movie is set in approximately the same period with Rod Taylor as a scientist whose magnificent time machine allows him to leap backward and forward in the annals of history. His adventures take him far into the future, where a meek and ineffectual race known as the Eloi have been forced to hide from the brutally monstrous Morlocks. As Taylor tests his daring invention, Oscar-winning special effects show us what the scientist sees: a cavalcade of sights and sounds as he races through time at varying speeds, from lava flows of ancient earth to the rise and fall of a towering future metropolis.

The movie's charm lies in its Victorian setting and the awe and wonder that carries over from Wells's classic story. The pioneering spirit of the movie is still enthralling, but it gets a bit silly when Taylor turns into a stock hero, rescuing a beautiful blonde Eloi (Yvette Mimieux) and battling with the chubby green Morlocks whose light-bulb eyes blink out when they die. Although it's quaint when compared to the special-effects marvels of the digital age, the movie's still highly entertaining and filled with a timeless sense of wonder. --Jeff Shannon

Time Machine Still Ticking
After all these years, "The Time Machine" (1960) remains a very entertaining movie. Of the five or six films produced by George Pal, "The Time Machine", which was also directed by him, along with "The War of the Worlds" (1953) are probably his finest films. Both films are loosely based on the novels of H.G. Wells and, for their time, boasted state of the art special effects, for which both films won an Oscar.

Rod Taylor is the lead character, supposedly H.G. Wells himself, who claims to his friends to have invented a time machine, allowing him to travel back and forth in time. His brief discussion with his friends, attempting to explain the principles of time travel, similar to the Wells novel, makes it seem almost plausible until one thinks about it a little longer. Taylor, whose British accent slowly fades away as the picture goes on, plays his character earnestly and is surrounded by an able cast: Sebastian Cabot, Tom Helmore, Whit Bissell, Yvette Mimieux, Doris LLoyd, very likable as his house maid, and, in particular, Alan Young, who delivers a perfect Scottish accent, as his devoted but practical-minded Scottish friend. Why not? Alan Young grew up in Edinburgh.

The special effects for this film are basically simple but effective, using time-lapse photography to simulate the acceleration of events that one would supposedly witness if he were rapidly moving forward in time. His journey, after a few brief stops to observe the two World Wars and a nuclear attack pointedly set in the mid 1960s, ultimately takes him several hundred thousand years into the future in which he encounters a race of "beautiful people", the Eloi and a race of barbarous beings called the Morlocks who are (literally) living off the Eloi. At this point the screen play of the picture and the novel of H.G. Wells part company, the movie pretty much resorting to melodramatic action for its resolution.

The video quality of the DVD is very good and the sound recording, as a pleasant surprise, is in genuine and high quality stereophonic sound although it was never presented that way in any theater in which I saw this film. The music is a rich orchestral score by Russ Garcia and adds a good deal to effectiveness of the film.

I thinks it's safe to say that this film version of the Wells novel, with all of its shortcomings, still betters the 2002 remake in spite of the technical superiority of the newer film. Alan Young makes a brief but welcome cameo appearance in the 2002 film which, unfortunately, fails to convey the atmosphere of H.G. Wells that the older film, at least in places, manages to accomplish,

An Excellent Documentary
"Plisetskaya Dances" (black and white, 1964) is an excellent documentary about the famous Bolshoi ballerina, Maya Plisetskaya. "'Plisetskaya has a rare combination of natural gifts: broad leaps; light, soaring jumps; a lithe and supple body; wonderful arms; but all this is not enough for a ballerina's success,' said the famous Ballet Master, Jean George Naverre. 'The language of ballet can only be understood,' he asserted, 'when the heart commands it to speak.'" This is a nice summing up of her talents, but she is also a nice "turner," as well.

In the last couple of decades, there has been a tendency toward extremely thin ballerinas. Maya has a much different build. She is trim, but she carries more natural weight than most of today's super-waifs. There has also been a recent preference for long-legged dancers, but Maya has shorter limbs. Maya has good leg extension, but not great. She does, however, have a very flexible back. So, she doesn't have the "look" that we have become accustomed to, but it can be refreshing to watch a natural, normal looking girl dance and not worry about whether she has an eating disorder.

This documentary talks about Maya's childhood and her family. Her mother was a film actress, and Maya inherited her good looks. There are film excerpts of Maya training at the Bolshoi Ballet School. Maya's uncle, Asaf Messerer (1903-1992), was also a famous Bolshoi dancer, and there are some shots of Asaf instructing Maya in his dance class. Later on, the tape shows Maya's husband, Rodion Shchedrin, a composer who dedicated some of his ballet scores to her. Throughout her life, Maya has been surrounded by family members who are in the performing arts.

This tape gives you a nice sense of her preparation for a ballet. Maya's dancing has been influenced by her own study of art and sculpture. It shows her meeting with a conductor to discuss the intricacies of a musical score. In my opinion, her theatrical abilities are more refined than most dancers, and her mother may have influenced this somewhat. There are some rehearsal excerpts of Maya training with distinguished ballet teachers and tutors. Maya has very nice arms and hands, and there is an interesting interview with her about it. There are many performance excerpts on this tape, and these artistic touches can be found throughout in her dancing.

The commentator states, "Maya Plisetskaya performs a wide range of roles, and in each, she is the same superb ballerina who masterfully combines pure classical tradition with a keen sense of our time." Here is a list of the dance excerpts on this tape: a complete performance of "The Dying Swan" by Camille Saint-Saens; performance excerpts from acts two and three of "Swan Lake" by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky; rehearsal and performance excerpts from "The Sleeping Beauty" by Tchaikovsky; performance excerpts from "Laurencia" by Alexander Krein; performance excerpts from "Spartacus" by Aram Khachaturian; performance excerpts from "The Little Humpbacked Horse" by Rodion Shchedrin; performance excerpts from "Khovanshchina" by Modest Mussorgsky; a short film excerpt from "Raymonda" by Alexander Glazunov; performance excerpts from "The Stone Flower" by Serge Prokofiev; rehearsal and performance excerpts from "Romeo and Juliet" by Serge Prokofiev; performance excerpts from a Charles Gounod piece; and performance excerpts from "Don Quixote" by Ludwig Minkus. The excerpts give you a clear idea of her technical and theatrical abilities.

There isn't room to discuss all of the excerpts, but a few comments are in order. The "Swan Lake" excerpts will give you a feel for her full length "Swan Lake" (1957) from Kultur Video that is also available on Amazon.com. I enjoy that video very much. "Laurencia" and "Don Quixote" are bold, Spanish numbers, and in them she does some high-energy bucking jumps, with arched back and hands thrown way back. It is interesting to compare Plisetskaya's "Romeo and Juliet" excerpts with the Royal Ballet's 1966 version with Margot Fonteyn, as each ballerina has different strengths and weaknesses. The excerpts from the Gounod piece are very charming; I really enjoy watching Maya dance these type of fast numbers, because she has so much flair. While rehearsing for "The Sleeping Beauty," Maya did a couple of seven revolution supported pirouettes, but she played it safe and only did four in the actual performance. If you enjoy watching ballerinas soar through the air, then you will like this tape. I enjoy the slow motion camera effects on her grand jetes and tour-jetes during rehearsal, as I frequently stop my tapes and re-watch jumps at one-fifth speed. Maya has a lot to offer, and that's why her tapes continue to sell after all these years.

Maya was born in 1925, and her career continued after this documentary was made in 1964. She has maintained her good figure, and you can still see her dancing "The Dying Swan" in her late sixties on "Essential Ballet: Stars of the Russian Ballet." "Plisetskaya Dances" is an excellent documentary that was thoughtfully made. I have watched it a number of times, and I come to appreciate more of its details each time I watch it. In conclusion, I am glad to have this tape in my video library. The tape says that "[Maya Plisetskaya] believes that the language of Russian classical ballet, inspired and melodious, endlessly renewed, brings joy to people," and I agree.

"Hopalong Cassidy Series ... Hills of Old Wyoming (1937) ... William Boyd as Hoppy"
Paramount Pictures presents "HILLS OF OLD WYOMING" (1937) (79 mins/B&W), features Stephen Morris (Morris Ankrum) using both names on the screen, as the "western heavy", came to Hollywood and Westerns directly from supporting Orson Welles on Broadway, Sherman and Boyd must have seen the evil this actor could portray, as he appeared in several "Hoppy films"...another pick for "Pop" Sherman was a new sidekick for the Cassidy films...a newcomer Lucky Jenkins, played by Russell Hayden had his job cut out for him, with Boyd (as the hero) and Hayes (for comedy), left the field of romance and action wide open, Hayden filled those "boots" perfectly.

The most outstanding series of westerns began in 1935 from Paramount Pictures "Hopalong Cassidy", under the guiding hand of producer Harry "Pop" Sherman...continued well into the '40s proved to be the most successful 'B' Westerns ever made...based on Clarence E. Mulford's stories, they strived in changing Cassidy's image, which was both original and influential...the hero, played by William Lawrence Boyd, was mature and a man of his word...the plots were solid with a sudden burst of climactic action in the last reel, usually a frantic chase backed by tension-building music.

In all, Boyd made sixty-six Hopalong Cassidy Westerns, early films included Uncle Ben and Windy Halliday, both played by veteran actor George "Gabby" Hayes...was a steady favorite as a hitchrack, was chosen five years in succession as one of the 10 best money-making Western sidekick stars...like most western comics, had his share of narrow escapes being thrown from his horse, burned by blanks...but that was all in a days work...his one-liners will never be forgotten..."You're dern tootin'"..."Never trust a female, they're pure poyzin"...or my all-time favorite ~ "Persnickgordy Women"...this crusty old-timer stole many a scene from John Wayne, Randolph Scott and yes even William Boyd.

William Lawrence Boyd, known as Hop-A-Long Cassidy never wears any outfit except his charactertistic black shirt, trousers, boots and Stetson...Hoppy rode, grinned and fought his way into our hearts on the silver screen and then right into our living rooms with a new inventions called...Television! ... Great Cast of Jimmy Ellison (Johnny Nelson) always hot-headed & getting into trouble...but the scene stealer is George "Gabby" Hayes, as the old-timer Uncle Ben, gives the a film shot in the arm with his down-to-earth humor and sentimentality, as the father figure to Hoppy the interaction with Boyd's character is pure Americana!

Must mention that it was sure good to see one of my all-time-favorite sidekicks George "Gabby" Hayes throw in with Hoppy. The added special features are simply great ~ Coming Attractions:"Hopalong Cassidy:Public Hero #1", plus a poster gallery, still gallery and my favorite is original materials from "Merchandising King of the Cowboys" museum exhibit. Hope "Image Entertainment" will keep releasing this outstanding series featuring Hopalong Cassidy in glorious black & white. I'll be standing in line for the next adventure with the Bar-20 wranglers ~ William Boyd (Hopalong Cassidy), they'll never be another like him.

Hoppy's interaction with California Carlson (Andy Clyde) is always a shot in the arm with his down-to-earth humor and sentimentality, theses scenes are pure Americana! Boyd, with his silver hair, black clothes and white horse (Topper) rode into our lives and we've never been the same since...your children and grandchildren will enjoy this clean wholesome entertainment...Hoppy always wore two silver white handle six shooters, never drank or smoked, when the good guys always won and the moral to the story was fair-play...outstanding role model...gotta love it!

Another pick for "Pop" Sherman was a new sidekick for the Cassidy films...a newcomer Lucky Jenkins, played by Russell Hayden had his job cut out for him, with Boyd (as the hero) and Andy Clyde (California Carlson) for comedy, left the field of romance and action wide open, Hayden filled those "boots" perfectly.

William Boyd was my hero, this collection of his films are perfect, clear and give me hope for the future. Our youth should have such a hero to look up to today. Must mention the fact that I still miss one of my all-time-favorite sidekicks though, George "Gabby" Hayes, you're durn tootin'!

Paramount and Clarence E. Mulford's fictional western character Hopalong Cassidy comes to life through William Boyd as Hoppy and Andy Clyde as California with films from the '40s...horse operas directed by Lesley Selander and George Archainbaud...some of the best hard riding and smokin' gunplay that ever came across the big screen from the Bar 20 boys...just the way we like 'em.
