Description : The hit Broadway musical from the 1940s gets a lavish if not always exciting workout in this 1955 film version directed by old lion Fred Zinnemann (High Noon). Gordon MacRae brings his sterling voice to the role of cowboy Curly, and Shirley Jones plays Laurie, the object of his affection. The Rodgers and Hammerstein score includes "The Surrey with the Fringe on Top," "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'," and "People Will Say We're in Love," and Agnes DeMille provides the buoyant choreography. Among the supporting cast, Gloria Grahame is memorable as Ado Annie, the "girl who cain't say no," and Rod Steiger overdoes it as the villainous Jud. --Tom Keogh

Oklahoma! was detailed in 70 mm -- Fox should not put any of the blame on Todd-AO!
Fox shouldn't blame the fledging Todd-AO itself, even though retrofitted onto existing cameras, for any of their problems with the Todd-AO transfer. I saw the original 70 mm Todd-AO version of Oklahoma! in the '50s, in San Francisco. I was a dedicated amateur photographer, working in both 35 mm and larger formats, and my photography friends and I marveled at the detail that got on the screen in Todd-AO. "Everyone" was talking about it! One day I was getting my hair cut and the stranger in the next chair started telling the barber how great Todd-AO was. It turned out he was a photographer too.

There was only one brief series of shots that was not clear -- during the "Many a new day" song, the young women toward the extreme right and left sides of the screen were not sharp in certain shots.

Words like "sharp" and "clear" may not be the most descriptive. At that time Kodak divided sharpness into two correlated properties "acutance" and "resolution." "Resolution" had the same definition as it does today, and, in use, was practically a synonym for detail or definition. "Acutance" was the capacity of a medium to make sharp edges -- like a knife edge -- look sharp .., and it was associated with a number of other factors, like contrast, and appropriateness of the brightness. The first two Todd-AO films, Oklahoma! (1955) and Around the World in 80 Days (1956) films had very high resolution, but very slightly softer acutance than some of the later 70 mm films (some of these later films had what reviewers commonly called "an etched look"). They both had very natural appearing color, more natural than usual in the movies, and more natural than we were used to seeing with the color print and slide films we were used to using.

Oklahoma! & 80 Days could both remain clear and detailed even when we moved down very close to the screen (row 9). Even people sitting farther back were treated to a very large image, because there was no stage, organ, or orchestra pit between the viewers and the screen ... the seats went right down almost to the chord of the curved screen's arc (at least in San Francisco). We measured the apparent size of the image with a calibrated detachable viewfinder, and found that the Todd-AO image (AR of 2.2:1) from the 20th row at the Coronet was about the same size in the viewfinder as was a 35 mm widescreen image (2.35, approximately) in the 5th row at the Grand Lake in Oakland, a movie palace with organ, stage, and pit taking up space. It should be noted that after a dispute between formats as childish as the VHS/Betamax or Blu-ray HD-DVD wars, the size of the image at the Coronet was reduced, when they took out the deeply curving Todd-AO screen, and put in a very shallowly curved screen that would be compatible with competing 70 mm formats. We simply moved closer after that change. They left the deeply curved curtains in place .. did they think nobody would notice?

One last note: The 6 channel magnetic sound was magnificent, and had really high dynamic range. The trombones and tuba between stanzas of the "The Farmer and the Cowman" song seemed to nearly rip the roof off. It was responsible for making me an audiophile.

Description : Produced for Turner Network Television and originally broadcast in the summer of 1999, The Hunley is a straightforward, engrossing historical drama focusing on a little-known chapter of the Civil War: the introduction of the submarine into American naval warfare off the shore of war-torn Charleston, South Carolina, in 1864. Writer-director John Gray had previously helmed the 1998 TV movie The Day Lincoln Was Shot, and he has a knack for capturing the Civil War era with a heightened sense of authenticity, allowing for the dramatic license of mainstream television. Armand Assante plays Lieutenant Dixon, a traumatized soldier and grieving widower with just the right mixture of bravado and nihilism to skipper the C.S.S. Hunley--essentially an iron boiler cobbled into a hand-powered submersible weapon--with a volunteer crew of nine men who propel the crude sub in an effort to break the Union's coastal blockade. Donald Sutherland is superbly cast as Dixon's Confederate commander, General Beauregard, and the film's best scenes are those between Assante and Sutherland, playing two weary warriors with one final chance for victory. Otherwise, this is a very conventional film made with integrity but no particular flair, faithfully adhering to historical fact while establishing a solid supporting cast. Assante is guilty of moderate overacting, but he compensates with enough charisma to make his ill-fated command dramatically involving. Most effective is the sense of sheer bravery in the pioneering effort to prove the Hunley as a viable tool of war; the final scene within the sub is both haunting and dramatically intense. (Historical note: The C.S.S. Hunley--named after the drowned captain of a previous test vessel--was discovered intact off the coast of Charleston in 1995; efforts were later made to raise and restore this relic of naval history.) --Jeff Shannon

Important events don't need a "theme"
This movie shows the first ever successful use of a true submarine in naval combat. Human history (for the literally the entire planet) was changed thereby. The one small drawback of this work may be that the truly profound implications of submarine warfare are not given nearly enough emphasis. Instead the events of the Hunley are sometimes forced to take a back seat to run of the mill movie themes: Dixon's love of his "Queenie", the Politics of Military generals, etc. Be that as it may, I loved this movie and highly recommend it. Five out of five stars!

Description : Jane Campion's The Piano struck a deep chord (if you'll excuse the expression) with audiences in 1993, who were mesmerized by the film's rich, dreamlike imagery. It is the story of a Scottish woman named Ada (Holly Hunter), who has been mute since age 6 because she simply chose not to speak. Ada travels with her daughter Flora (Anna Paquin) and her beloved piano to a remote spot on the coast of New Zealand for an arranged marriage to a farmer (Sam Neill). She gives piano lessons to a gruff neighbor (Harvey Keitel) who has Maori tattoos on his face, and, well, things develop from there. The picture takes on a powerful dream logic that simply defies synopsis. It's a breathtakingly beautiful and original achievement from Campion, a unique stylist. The Piano won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and Oscars for Hunt, Paquin, and Campion's screenplay. --Jim Emerson

Don't mistake this for a 'regular romantic tale' !
An amazing, overwhelming film that really manages to grab your attention right from the beginning. Holly Hunter manages to express a lot with her eyes, she performs with extreme vigor, passion and flamboyancy, you can't take your eyes off her, every moment she manages to convey something or the other to the viewer, Sam Neill and Harvey Keitel are excellent. The film starts with a normal slow pace but gets very dark and bold slowly. The score is beautiful, the chemistry between every co-star is excellent in the film, the film doesn't emphasize on romance or just passionate tales, there is much more than that as the film gets very bold in terms of human sexuality and can be disturbing to the viewer at times. Moreover, the film is a pure example of neat acting and direction, beautiful locations and a priceless Piano score makes the film worthwhile.

I have been to the Greek island of Santorini and this video is an added accompliment for those who have been there and enjoy history! It explains more fully what took place and how the island came about, plus the 'myth" surrounding the Lost City of Atlantis. Very picturesque and enjoyable to watch as well.

Intercultural study
I have used this video in a humanities survey course for several years and have had great success with it. It illustrates ancient Mesopotamian culture fairly well and serves as a fine transition into a discussion of the epic "Gilgamesh" which we read immediately after the film viewing. Students seem truly to enjoy it as well; just yesterday a student asked if she could take it home to share with her family. I think it spends so much time on the comparison of Biblical text to Mesopotamian text because that is the major theme of the entire video, to illustrate the intersections and interactions of the ancient Israelites and the Mesopotamians through their archaeology, historical documents, and mythology. I have two objections to the video: 1) the opening and closing seem fairly corny to me and to my students and make very general speculations compared to the very specific evidence inside the content proper; 2) the use of old silent film footage of the flood or Babylonian cities detracts rather than adds to the quality of the film. This is an objection I have to videos in the entire series and not just this volume.

Description : Solid entertainment from a new group of Disney animators. The story source is a Chinese fable about a young girl who disguises herself as a man to help her family and her country. When the Huns attack China, a call to arms goes out to every village, and Mulan's father, being the only man in the family, accepts the call. Mulan (voiced by Ming-Na Wen, sung by Lea Salonga) has just made a disastrous appearance at the Matchmaker and decides to challenge society's expectations (being a bride). She steals her father's conscription notice, cuts her hair, and impersonates a man to join the army. She goes to boot camp, learning to fit in with the other soldiers with some help from her sidekick, Mushu, a wise-cracking dragon (voiced by Eddie Murphy). She trains, and soon faces the Huns eye-to-eye to protect her Emperor.

The film is gorgeous to look at, with a superior blend of classic and computer-generated animation. Directors Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook make the best of it: a battle in the snowy mountains is as thrilling as the best Hollywood action films. The menacing Huns are not cute but simple and bad. The wickedness is subtle, not disturbing. The film is not a full-fledged musical, as it has only five songs (the best, "Be a Man," is sung during boot camp). Eddie Murphy is an inspired choice for the comic-relief dragon, but his lines are not as clever as Robin Williams's in Aladdin. These are minor quibbles, though. The story is strong, and Mulan goes right to the top of Disney animated heroines; she has the right stuff. --Doug Thomas

Amazing Movie, Awesome Special Features
I was so happy when this came in the mail. Not only is the story of Mulan heartwarming, courageous, and inspiring, the style of animation and the legend behind the movie is gorgeous as well. In addition, the special features and "Behind the Scenes" info given out made me love the movie even more. What I liked best was seeing all of the concept art that was drawn before deciding on the permanent character designs was chosen. I'd recommend this to any Disney fan.

Description : Mozart's Marriage of Figaro is a comedy whose dark undertones explore the blurred boundaries between dying feudalism and emerging Enlightenment. Among dozens of fine Figaros on CD and DVD, few are as finely sung as this one, filmed in 1976 to a soundtrack recorded the previous year.

Herman Prey's Figaro is admirably sung in a firm baritone and aptly characterized. So too, is his antagonist, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau as the Count perpetually frustrated by the scheming wiles of Figaro and Susanna, here the perky Mirella Freni, who sings and acts like a dream. The Countess is creamy-voiced Kiri Te Kanawa, and the Cherubino, Maria Ewing, looks just like the horny, teenaged page she's supposed to be. The all-star leads are complemented by worthy supporting singers, the Vienna Philharmonic at the top of its form, and the experienced Mozartian, Karl Böhm conducting a stylishly fleet performance.

The problematic visuals though, don't match the musical attributes of this Figaro. Director Jean-Pierre Ponnelle says film techniques of editing and special effects permit added musical and interpretive components. So we get nervously irrelevant camera movements, distorted close-ups, jump-cuts that place singers in impossible places during arias, and--most distracting of all--arias on the soundtrack while the "singer" stares close-mouthed at walls, ceilings, and furnishings. Try Te Kanawa's beautifully sung "Porgi amor" to see how this distracting technique subverts the music, rather than "complementing" it. Of course, this may not bother many but others will prefer to listen to the glorious soundtrack and give Ponnelle's directorial hubris a pass. --Dan Davis

The best Figaro ever
This is an amazing version. Probably the best Figaro cast ever assembled. And an unusually thoughtful take on the opera that digs beneath the surface and makes it clear why the censors in Mozart's day weren't exactly crazy for Beaumarchais. This production makes it clear we're dealing with a period just before the French Revolution (for ex., in the first scene, when Figaro is unpacking his books, we are allowed to see that one of them is Thomas Paine's Common Sense, and when the peasants are confronted by Count Almaviva they make it quite clear that they'd like to frog-march the s. o. b. to the nearest guillotine).
