Description : This soapy but highly watchable television "sequel" to Gone with the Wind, the most popular Hollywood movie ever made, has nothing to do with memories of a vanished antebellum South. But it does end up in Ireland, where the determined Scarlett O'Hara Butler (played with frosty passion by Joanne Whalley-Kilmer) turns hard times into an opportunity by buying the ancestral home of her family. Before that happens, however, Scarlett fights to win back the estranged Rhett Butler (manfully portrayed by Timothy Dalton), often seen in the company of other women, struggles for control over the homestead Tara, and gets caught in yet another compromising position with poor Ashley Wilkes (Stephen Collins). The troubles never stop (Scarlett's Ireland adventures land her in a heap of trouble from which only Rhett can save her), but this TV miniseries wisely keeps the focus on these captivating characters, their entangled histories, and the collective destiny that refuses to part them. The show also looks good: the location scenes in Ireland are particularly handsome, and there is something unaccountably satisfying about seeing Scarlett and Rhett walking through peaceful green hills. Enjoy. --Tom Keogh

so dissappointed
The character of scarlett is just plain awful...she doesn't even have green eyes...did the director even read GWTW or Scarlett, Timothy Dalton is not so much of a bother. The Scarlett book sequel was slightly different than expected by Alexandra Ripley but the movie was just way out in left field-not so much the story but just the actors...do watch it if your a fan just like I am but don't hold your expectations too high, in this movie Scarlett is not likable, not beautiful, and not endearing to us and the feeble attempt she makes at talking like a southerner is irritating...why the directors chose English actors is a mystery to me??? Timothy is handsome and big of course and he fits Rhett decent-not Clark Gable of course but still I know none of us expect either of them to equal Vivien Leigh or Clark but it would have been nice to at least seen a good attempt for a novel that was a sequel to such a phenomenal book like GWTW.

Description : Richard Simmons, the great motivator, presents another light-intensity, low-impact, high-energy workout in the style of his popular Sweatin' to the Oldies series. Again live music is the focus--this time 1980s dance hits such as "Celebration," "Flashdance," "Gloria," "She Works Hard for the Money," and "Call Me." Just like in the Sweatin' videos, Simmons leads a large class of people of both genders and all shapes and sizes--all having the time of their lives dancing, singing, and cheering (their noisiness may grate on you after a while). Richard wears his signature shorts and tank top, and his followers wear multicolored casual clothes. The message is that it doesn't matter how you look or how much you weigh--just show up and dance! The dance-style choreography is matched to the music, but no moves require much coordination or memory. Simmons barely cues the changes--just watch and follow. This tape is a lot of fun, especially if you remember this music well enough to sing along! At the end of the tape, the performers dance down the center while we read their names and the amount of weight they've lost. Several have lost more than 100 pounds, and one woman has lost 282 pounds! (No, that's not a misprint.) Simmons is to be applauded for making exercise accessible and enjoyable to a whole population of people who didn't know that workouts could be fun. --Joan Price

Description : Hollywood's legendary "woman's director," George Cukor (The Women, The Philadelphia Story), transformed Audrey Hepburn into street-urchin-turned-proper-lady Eliza Doolittle in this film version of the Lerner and Loewe musical. Based on George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, My Fair Lady stars Rex Harrison as linguist Henry Higgins (Harrison also played the role, opposite Julie Andrews, on stage), who draws Eliza into a social experiment that works almost too well. The letterbox edition of this film on video certainly pays tribute to the pageantry of Cukor's set, but it also underscores a certain visual stiffness that can slow viewer enthusiasm just a tad. But it's really star wattage that keeps this film exciting, that and such great songs as "On the Street Where You Live" and "I Could Have Danced All Night." Actor Jeremy Brett, who gained a huge following later in life portraying Sherlock Holmes, is quite electric as Eliza's determined suitor. --Tom Keogh

Description : They just don't make musicals like this any more. There are some who would be grateful for that--the plot is but a flimsy excuse to string together song and dance numbers. Some of us, however, love big, splashy, overdone musical scenes, of which there are many. Glittering stage numbers showcase a commanding Barbra Streisand as Dolly Levy, a New York matchmaker who can find a mate for anyone. Anyone but herself, that is. Determined to marry wealthy Walter Matthau, she lures him out of Yonkers and sets about wooing him.

Don't worry about the lack of a solid story or Gene Kelly's pedestrian direction. Watch instead for the musical numbers and the lavish costumes. Listen to Jerry Herman's score, and dance around the living room when a sequined Streisand arrives in a club as Louis Armstrong strikes up the title tune for her benefit. (Just pull the shades first.) Based on Thornton Wilder's play The Matchmaker, Hello, Dolly! won Academy Awards for best sound, art direction, and musical score. --Rochelle O'Gorman

I love the title track.
I had heard "Hello, Dolly" at a young age. I'd thought it sounded like Dolly had left home at a young age and the show was her returning home, perhaps followed by her decision to leave home again. I was in for a vigorous "awakening".
I enjoyed the little bit of plot; I DEFINITELY enjoyed seeing a younger Walter Matthau on the screen! I had to concentrate on the show a little, make sure I was watching Dolly Levi, the character, not Barbra Streisand, the actress. Somewhat difficult, due to Streisand's actions and views over the years.
All in all, not too bad, except the director and producer could've cut about 25-40% of the dance numbers. I like a good bit of dancing, but not THIS much!

Peter & the Wolf
This is a very old story, set to music by Prokofiev. It was adapted by Disney as one of ten segments of the animated feature film, "Make Mine Music" in 1946. Narrated by Sterling Holloway (the voice of Pooh) it is the story of a young boy who goes with his pet cat Ivan, duck Sonia, and bird Sasha to catch the wolf. The music has always been a popular way to teach people the value of classical music, and how music can be expressive and teach a story. Each animal and person in the story is expressed by a musical instrument, such as Peter by a string quartet, Grandpa by the bassoon, and the hunters by kettledrums. The piece is hilarious and very well animated. It was edited into a short featurette for the first time in 1955.
Also appears on the Make Mine Music DVD.

Description : In one of those plot devices so dear to writers of romantic comedy (in this case, the venerable Norman Krasna, of Wife vs. Secretary and Mr. and Mrs. Smith), financier Charles Coburn goes undercover as a shoe salesman in a Manhattan department store that's a tiny part of his portfolio, hoping to discover why the employees hate him so much. He has the luck to be assigned to the counter next to Jean Arthur, rasping out one of her inimitable hard-nosed working-girl-with-a-heart-of-gold performances, who befriends Coburn and introduces him to her boyfriend (Robert Cummings)--the leader of the labor unrest. Directed by the stodgy Sam Wood (King's Row), the film flirts with '30s radicalism but settles for prudent class reconciliation: turns out that all the employees want is a little bit of gratitude and respect. Coburn got his first Academy Award nomination for his gruff but ultimately lovable coot (and won the Oscar two years later, opposite Arthur in The More the Merrier), a part he was to play for much of the rest of his career. Some startling deep-focus effects suggest that cinematographer Harry Stradling may have been spying on Citizen Kane, shooting just down the hall at RKO. Ultimately, though, it's Arthur who gives the film its authenticity and tremulous charm. --Dave Kehr

Coburn Stars In This Charmer
Charles Coburn was a funny man. I wish had more movies with him in them, as he usually makes me laugh. He did here, and this movie was on it's way to a rating of "10" when it bogged down midway through and never really regained momentum. It did have a nice sentimental ending, though.

Coburn, meanwhile, was outstanding as the super-rich owner of a department store who goes "underground" as a shoe salesman in his store to find out the cause of worker unrest. Then romance takes over the story: Coburn and Spring Byington and then Bob Cummings and Jean Arthur and the story loses a lot of it comedy touch and its zip.

Overall, the film still exudes charm and Coburn, despite third billing, IS the star of this film. I'm sure a number of fans of this film are disappointed it still isn't out on DVD.

Description : "I've never seen a woman who was more like a man," a character observes of Vienna (Joan Crawford), who has just opened a saloon that hasn't exactly endeared itself to the local townspeople. Emma (Mercedes McCambridge), the local sexually repressed, lynch-happy harpy, is particularly displeased. Vienna is wooed both by the Dancin' Kid (Scott Brady) and by Johnny Guitar (Sterling Hayden), a peripatetic tough guy-turned-troubadour with whom she has a past.

When the Kid's gang (which includes Ernest Borgnine) decides to knock over the bank before heading to California, Emma wants just about everyone in sight on the business end of a rope. Nicolas Ray's 1954 epic was considered one of the downright strangest Westerns of all time--the women were far tougher than the men (Johnny watches on laconically during the bank robbery, not bothering with heroics), and some saw in the film a bizarre allegory for the McCarthy Red scare. A half-century later, it's still a curious, intriguing piece of moral ambiguity from a time when such a thing ostensibly didn't exist. Hayden is an enigmatic presence, and Crawford's commanding star turn is what you'd expect. --David Kronke

Joan's "greatest triumph"
Find out why a hive can only support 1 Queen-Bee when you watch JOAN's **Greatest Triumph**!

If you've never seen this movie you're in for a big surprise and even a guilty pleasure. And, if you have seen it then you've found a rare gem, that is cinematic gold, courtesy of the one and only, world-famed, Joan Crawford (may she rest in peace).

After more than a year I just saw this movie again and each time I watch it it's like the very first time. I can't begin to tell you how much I adore "Johnny Guitar." It's a broad mix of high-drama, action, country and western and buckles, boots & spurs! Some have even said that it's somewhat of a musical. No matter how you describe it though, you'll agree that the entire movie is like 1 huge Joan Crawford infomercial. Joan got the best scenes, the best costumes, the best lines and all the men were all in love with her and fighting for her. But she's Joan Crawford and what the woman wants the woman gets.

What I liked most about the movie is how it ended. So dramatic and over-the-top and in pure Joan Crawford cinema fashion! And usually at the end of an epic picture such as "Johnny Guitar" I am somewhat morose, but not this time. Because it's so beautiful and almost a celebration of the picture. I love how Johnny (Sterling Hayden) takes Vienna (Joan) and they kiss passionately under the waterfall as Peggy Lee's title anthem plays, then all of a sudden a huge eagle eclipses the screen with the words REPUBLIC imposed over it. So dramatic!

The film is important because it says so much. You can watch it strictly as a western and get a lot out of it. Or, you can sit and analyse the societal issues that plague both the Dancin' Kid's (played by character actor, Scott Brady) posse and Emma Small (Mercedes McCambridge) and her gang. And perhaps you'll see that this is a story of rich, verses poor, or a story of a lovelorn, bitter and scorned woman who will stop at nothing to spread her rueful hate because damn it if she's miserable she's going to make sure that everyone that gets in her way will be miserable, too.

Speaking of miserable, Mercedes McCambridge played the perfect adversary to Joan. No, the 2 didn't like each other because they were each desperately envious of the other (for very different reasons). And in many scenes this viewer could see such raw emotion that broke the 4th wall and spilled out in real life. (Watch the first scene with Joan on the steps and Mercedes standing in front of her saying "I'm going to kill you." That look in both of their eyes cannot be duplicated because like the galaxies in the universe, it is completely unique). I think if Mercedes McCambridge learned anything it's that you don't mess with Joan Crawford, when she's been the reigning drama(tic) queen for the past 30 years prior.

The coup de grāce has gotta be when Emma scampers back into Vienna's and shoots down that huge, grand chandelier (that I think every Joan Crawford movie has). It wasn't enough that she railroaded Turkey (Ben Cooper) into betraying Vienna and it wasn't enough that she was about to have the 2 hung. Nope, this old (rhymes with) witch wanted to see Vienna's good time saloon burn as wild and hot as the hell-fire torch that she's held for the Dancin' Kid. (Or was all that just a rouse to hide the lurid lust that Emma really felt for Vienna...?)

Although in essence this was purely Joan's picture, there was something very intriguing about Mercedes McCambridge's character, Emma. Emma was the type of person who was desperate for love and desperate for attention; she wanted to have all eyes on her. But as much as she wanted to have people near her, that's how much she pushed them (all) away. I felt pity for her because she put up such a fight against Vienna, and although she played very dirty she still couldn't catch a break. Even her own posse was practically routing for Vienna. To me, the character of Emma is essentially more decisive than Vienna. Because Emma was a representation of what can happen if you let hate consume you. Like a disease it eats you up inside and it's all you can think about until you literally implode.

Contrary to the Wikipedia "Johnny Guitar" page the film has never been released officially on "DVD formats." There is actually no official release of the film in any country on DVD, including the US. The item on this page is a DVD that although is made in made in the UK is actually marketed to the US by a company that holds no proprietary rights over the picture. This DVD IS region-specific and includes. No special features are included and it has not been remastered in any way, shape, or form.

"Johnny Guitar" is also important because it included such a first-rate cast of very talented and established supporting stars. To name just a couple, Mr. Ernest Borgnine (a year before his defining picture, "Marty") played Bart Lonergan, a member of the Dancin' Kid's posse. In this role, Mr. Borgnine played against type, but even so, he was so believable and convincing as the group's resident Judas in disguise. And veteran western character actor Royal Dano played Corey, another member of the posse, who, like all of the men that came into contact her had a special place in his heart for Vienna.

Someday (soon???!!) I hope whomever owns the rights to the film (Republic, CBS Pictures/Video & Audio Communications, Inc.?) gets their act together and releases this modern-day masterpiece onto DVD. Joan Crawford fans have been waiting diligently for years to watch what was once described as "Joan's greatest triumph" in all its raging, colorful glory. Personally, I would be just happy with a straight transfer onto DVD, it doesn't need any extras or special features whatsoever.

"No excuse for a picture being this bad, or for me making it," Joan once said about "Johnny Guitar." Needless to say, as the perfectionist that she always was, Joan did not like anything that did not meet her high standards and "Johnny Guitar" was one of her movies that she never really accepted and in fact collectively went out of her way not to promote. But what's most unusual about Joan and what really says a lot about her character is that no matter how excellent a movie was that she made, she always was so humble and so gracious and so kind to her colleagues. But with a film that was less than perfect (in her mind) such as this one she tended to take all of the burden and blame herself completely. I just wish Joan were still alive today to see an entirely new generation of fans, fans who were not even born when she passed away, that are now enjoying this movie for the very first time.

Description : Think A Summer Place, and you'll probably be humming Max Steiner's wonderfully romantic instrumental theme song, a hand-holding hit in 1959. The movie itself is similarly irresistible, a colorful soap opera about the passions of a pair of dewy-eyed teens and their straying parents. At an island resort in Maine, Sandra Dee and Troy Donahue (the reigning teen idols of the day) fall hard for each other. What they don't know is that her father (Richard Egan) and his mother (Dorothy McGuire), lovers 20 years earlier, have rekindled their affair. Both, inconveniently, have spouses, which is what makes this a soap opera. Lovers of camp will find much to savor in the incredible '50s attitudes, and in the innocence of supervirgin Dee ("Johnny, have you been bad with girls?"). Yet the sincerity of writer-director Delmer Daves, cowriter of An Affair to Remember, comes shining through the corn; and the grown-up affair anticipates The Bridges of Madison County by 30 years. --Robert Horton

A Summer Place - Absolutely A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!
The title is very misleading. I saw this movie when I was a young girl and I didn't really understand it then, now in my 40's and seeing it from an adult's perspective - it blew me away!

Interesting how candid this movie was, considering the time frame it was set in and the issues surrounding pre-marital sex or fornication back then, especially with the impetus on marriage for society's sake. Moreover, what was more surprising was the embarrassment surrounding the young teens' dilemma; their initial fear, decisions and responsibilities regarding pregnancy; education, immediately taking control of their lives, deciding to wed but being turned away by the Justice of Peace because they were underage was sad.

What's more, is the sad turn of events regarding both their parents' adulterous affairs, alcoholism, and the young girl's mom completely disowning her because of her inappropriate actions, and the scandal that followed.

This movie had me enthralled and shocked at the girl's mom who decides to have a doctor examine her daughter to see whether or not she had sex. I was aghast!

Fantastic acting, gripping story-line, amazing directing, and fantastic scenery to expose the lifestyles of the wealthy in the 50's. This movie could have easily been about impoverished kids from dysfunctional families - identical theme: teenage pregnancy, fornication, adultery, alcoholism - different environment. A film like this back then would have met with loud gasps, and embarrassing feminine faintings. Every dirty story kept hushed - so I'm cheering loudly for this brave expose! Two thumbs up!!

Sandra Dee and Troy Donahue were absolutely the best characters for these roles.
This a MUST-SEE movie! Absolutely BRILLIANT!! FIVE stars!
