| Description : | Riverdance--The Show is a cultural phenomenon that defies criticism for the enthusiastic and leaves everyone else scratching their heads. The wonderfully talented cast, headed by the Riverdance Irish Dance Company, bewitchingly spins (and stomps) its Celtic folk choreography featuring numerous breathless solos by Michael Flatley (since departed) and Jean Butler. The mellifluous Riverdance Orchestra boasts Davy Spillane, who coaxes plaintive lamentations out of a peculiar instrument that resembles a bagpipe in a metal leg brace. For Enya fans, there is the sound-alike choral group Anuna, who casts a similarly New Age-style vocal spell. Also thrown into the mix are such disparate folk traditions as American gospel and Spanish flamenco. Though it's only 70 minutes long, Riverdance is repetitive by half. But judging from the ecstatic audience ovations and the continued foot-stomping during and after the curtain calls, too much is still not enough. --Richard Natale |

| Description : | Garry Marshall, the man behind Pretty Woman, has made two movies here. One is based on Anne Rice's erotic novel of a fantasy island where dreams are fulfilled and sexuality is open to all, led by a congenial dominatrix (Dana Delany) and a glowing new recruit (Paul Mercurio of Strictly Ballroom). The other is a farcical comedy-action movie, which is what you saw in the ads. Savoy Pictures must have been unsure of to how to market the movie, and they pushed the secondary action of pop songs, needless narration, and even a few noticeable dubs. Amazingly, though, the film works by the end as a guilty pleasure, thanks to the four principals. Delany finally ripples on the big screen, Rosie O'Donnell has her first confident work since A League of Their Own, Dan Aykroyd becomes a comic mainstay, and best of all is Mercurio. The brooding stud is a delight, and is sure to launch a million fans as the loverboy who finds a sweet love story. Agreeable stuff if you really want Rice's erotic novels turned into cute TV-ish comedies. With, as always, Hector Elizondo. --Doug Thomas |

This film is so darkly hilarious and funny...one of the best comedies ever made. All the actors are great. Of course, John Belushi, Dan Ackroyd, and Cathy Moriarity...but remember the guy from Sat. Night Live's 6th season in the chimp skits (I Married a Monkey) who was so hilarious? Well, he's in Neighbors, too, as another sardonic Belushi tormentor. |

" I think I may possibly love you" " NO it is you who will be getting drowsier, and drowsier" " With you never a quickie, always a longie" My only complaint is that they changed the music score. I loved " Love the night life" disco music originally in the music and listed on the credits. it really worked with movie, the replacment track sucks. |

| Reviews : { Rating: 4.0 out of 5 } | Entertaining AND accurate I saw this movie three or four times when it first came out on the big screen. It might be considered a little sugary today, but compared to the poor releases we now see from Tinseltown, it is miles ahead. The United States in the War of 1812 were not the losers nor the "bad guys." There were several reasons for the war, most of them based on the British understanding that these states were still colonies and therefore liable for assisting their naval war against the French (e.g., by the impressment of American seamen). The outcome of the war forever abolished that idea; for that reason, the War of 1812 is justly termed America's Second War for Independence and a key victory. It is true that the British did not wear kilts at new Orleans, but this movie, as well as the 1938 version, if anything downplay the stupendous achievement by Jackson and the civilians, militia and few career soldiers on the American side. A small British force did advance on the opposite side of the river, but their initial landings were soundly thrashed, their preceding artillery barrage was smashed and their naval attack upriver was decisively repulsed, all before the great attack of January 8th (a national holiday for Americans up to the Civil War). The victory also meant that the British were barred from seizing and holding the city as a naval base, which the treaty of Ghent, signed in December, 1814, was deliberately worded to let them do (see Peter Reilly's British at the Gates). This movie is enjoyable and, at times, inspiring and, guess what - it is also factual. |
