Description : Television director-producer Scott Winant (thirtysomething) made his feature debut with this predictable romantic-comedy about two people destined to meet and fall in love--though it takes 20 years for their lives to intersect. A good idea done before, the film doesn't have anything new to offer, and the excessive sweetness of Winant's approach can't mask the lack of originality. Still, it boasts a very attractive cast, and it's fun watching these actors work together. --Tom Keogh

A perfect movie.
'Til There Was You
This is a lovely film. Romantic and quirky, with highly enjoyable performances by Jeanne Tripplehorn, Dylan McDermott and a pre-SATC turn by Sarah Jessica Parker. I live in Los Angeles, CA where the film takes place, and the settings feel oh, so familiar.
There are some elements that recall other favorites of mine: Frequency and Sliding Doors. For a while, 'Til There Was You was so rarely on television that finally, I purchased it.

Description : Cary Grant's penultimate feature before retirement was this cheerful 1964 effort to overturn his career-long image of urbane sophistication. As the unshaven, messy misanthrope Walter Eckland, a World War II-era beach bum who monitors Japanese air activity for the Australian navy in exchange for booze, Grant makes a convincingly hard-bitten, hard-drinking antihero. Until, that is, a pretty French schoolmistress (Leslie Caron) and her seven little charges (all girls) survive a nearby plane crash and invade Eckland's raunchy isolation. Directed by 1960s hit-maker Ralph Nelson (The Lilies of the Field, Charly), Father Goose is a glossy comedy that also does justice to its more suspenseful scenes (a deadly snakebite suffered by Caron's character is especially memorable) and leaves plenty of room for Grant to indulge in some entertaining if atypical screen behavior. All in all, this is a minor treat in the actor's magnificent filmography. --Tom Keogh

Come on in, the picture's fine!
I've just seen this movie, & the picture quality is just fine. As a matter of fact, I would say it looks great, which is saying a lot since this is from Republic pictures(by the way, I'm talking about how it looks on a large lcd flat screen tv, not a 25 inch picture-tube model). Yes, there will always be people who want a near photo quality resolution from 2 inches away...just step back a couple of feet & you'll be fine. In the end, it is still good enough that it represents a great leap in quality over the old vhs...you may not recognize that it is the same film!

I don't need to go into the plot here. Just, if you haven't seen it before, then get it now - you won't be sorry! It's really funny. The supporting cast is great. And Cary Grant is just fabulous in this one!

The Sopranos series
Don't hesitate, purchase the complete series. If you enjoy suspense, you will love it. No Cons at all, Pros, HBO has some of the best writers to backup the quality of this show. The Sopranos is very addictive along with most other series's from the HBO Collection. This is my absolute favorite series of all time.

Sufficiently Interesting
This Video has it's high points and it's lows too. Most segments are interesting, but not that wonderful. I'm a big fan of Stacy Sanches and Carrie Wescott, so the scene at the pool has to be my personal favorite, but many of the rest are decent too. I'd say that I'd recommend you buy the second video in the series if you want a great video. This one is okay.

Description : Jack Campbell (Nicolas Cage) is the quintessential Wall Street shark, scoring killer deals by day and shallow escort sex by night. His round-the-clock routine of empty luxuries is disturbed one lonely Christmas Eve when a gun-packing punk (Don Cheadle)--perhaps an angel of mercy--responds to an altruistic gesture from Jack by giving him "a glimpse" of the life he could have had. Could have, that is, if he had married the girlfriend (Téa Leoni) he'd abandoned 13 years earlier, raised two adorable children, worked in his father-in-law's retail tire outlet, and lived happily ever after in suburban New Jersey. Thrust into this "glimpse" of the path not taken, Jack's a single-malt man in a lite-brew world, wondering if he'll ever return to his "better" life of callous wealth and solitude--or if he even wants to.

Carp all you want about this derivative premise, with its marginal stereotypes and biased embrace of domestic bliss and dirty diapers. The simple fact is, The Family Man works like a charm. Under the assured direction of Brett Ratner (Rush Hour), this holiday crowd-pleaser offers comedy and chemistry in equal measure, making the hilarity of Jack's predicament a smooth catalyst for that rarest of movie romances: the marital love story. Leoni is Cage's perfect match as Jack's idealized but imperfect wife, and the movie's appeal largely derives from its awareness that any life has its pleasures and pains. While it only flirts with the dark desperation that makes It's a Wonderful Life a classic predecessor, The Family Man is an irresistible what-if fantasy, and even its debatable ending rides on a wave of genuine warmth and sentiment. --Jeff Shannon

Entertaining and Educational
This movie sold me on the philosophy that you should build yourself up before starting a family so you have more to offer your kids. Everyone is afraid of (1) not having enough TIME with their kids and (2) not having ENOUGH money. This message that I derived from this movie has stuck with me since seeing the film many years ago. It's a fun movie that is good to watch with older kids during Christmas time but for me, it is better than fun. It's really made me think about how many nice people are considered working middle class who don't have a lot to show for it but they're not stupider than people who financially better off. So what's missing from our country's culture that there are so many working families when America is still known as the Land of Opportunity and the top pick for immigration? I think we should be specifically supporting everyone who is working poor or officially middle class to get their kids into the medical profession not the high finance and legal professions. Medical studies should be part of the core curriculum. It doesn't matter if kids take a shorter program in nursing if they don't feel confident about doing a long stint in medical school. If your son loves GI JOE, let him know that he can win more battles if he can perform triage on the battlefield. Nurses can make a low 6 figure salary. Doctors can make a middle to high 6 figure salary just as a private practitioner seeing 18.5 patients per day. I look around and I think Americans are too smart to not be earning more on average. We need more/most kids to become medical professions. It's the course of study that will enrich your personal life not just your professional one. Another thing that this movie made me think about is the good that China's One Child Policy brought about because when citizens simply don't enjoy the quality of life of the American Dream, people really shouldn't be thinking about making big families until the would-be parents are in a secure place in their own lives. It's terrible to have children in a struggling situation. This film is a companion piece to It's a Wonderful Life.

Description : Written and directed by Cédric Klapisch, this delightful French film from 1997 is less interested in its plot--about a young Parisian woman named Chloé (Garance Clabel) who is searching for her lost cat--than it is in her response to the sudden predicament of being truly alone. Chloe's life is hardly thrilling, and romance has proven elusive, so when her cat disappears while she's away on a brief vacation, it's a minor crisis that reminds Chloé of just how lonely she is, and her exhaustive search for the cat begins. She recruits her neighbors and a network of women who know every cat in the district where she lives. But When the Cat's Away is really about the rhythms of Chloé's daily life, the lives of the people around her, and the changing identity of the neighborhood as it undergoes renovation. Like the films of Eric Rohmer, this film is filled with casual observation and quiet revelations of character. It hardly seems like a film at all, but rather a privileged glimpse into the lives of very real people whom we come to know and admire, and in whom we recognize parts of ourselves. --Jeff Shannon

Careful if you don't speak French
I can't comment on the movie since I have not watched it. But I did purchase this from the Amazon France site since it was not available here last year. No English subtitles on mine. So if you don't speak French, this DVD may not be so great.

Description : Funny Bones, directed by Peter Chelsom (Hear My Song), is a weird but intriguing comedy with a particularly dark edge. Oliver Platt plays a would-be comedian, the son of a major comedy star (Jerry Lewis); Dad's reputation even overshadows his son's Las Vegas debut. After that flop the son tries to go back to his roots and heads for his father's launch pad in Blackpool, England. There, he meets his previously unknown half-brother (Lee Evans), a bizarre comedy savant who teaches him a thing or two about taking risks to get laughs, and discovers a secret about how his father got started. Platt is likably lost and Lewis is perfectly overbearing, but the real find here is Evans, a rubber-faced, protean comic with always-surprising material. --Marshall Fine

Supllement to other reviews
I enjoy repeat views of this movie, as I know that I will find unexpected humor that I missed. TIPS: 1) If you purchase this video and not have seen it before, then you should skip the great review entitled "for those who don't "get" Funnybones - instead, you should experience it first on your own. 2) ALSO, SKIP MY LAST SENTENCES. Read them AFTER you view the film; for starters, allow yourself to be baffled or surprised in some spots, and I envy your first experience. 3) BUT DO THIS: put your TV on closed captions at the ultimate and final circus scene at the sway pole, as you might not otherwise understand the thick British accent for the movie's final lines -an important conclusion.

NOW FOR THE DESCRIPTION: This movie was clearly a labor of love: a rich, sensitive exploration of many forms of humor and the people who do it. With every repeat view, you will see something new in the style of humor: in the set-up, often in the visuals, and in some one-liners - many of which are not central to the plot - just funny! I think of it NOT as a "comedy", but as a drama "about comedy". I did NOT laugh in the first viewing, but was, instead, was engaged, surprised and touched. In later viewings, I found myself more relaxed and laughing in many unexpected scenes (the few seconds of the Jerry Lewis-Leslie Caron b/w scenes were the first to get me, as it was humor from childhood). To the critics: Repeat criticisms have been made of the underdeveloped Oliver Reed / Magic Egg plot, but to its defense, it gives energy to the boffo performances by the Parker Brothers towards the end of the film. Also, why not give the music a good listen, particularly at the rolling of the credits? Can music be funny? Sure! Mere evidence of more good, loving choice by the movie makers.

SPOILER ALERT; newbies do not read this: There are clever lines that are often quoted from this movie, but an unquoted one that really caught me off-guard was the incongruity in "Tommy! Oh, Tommy! Your father is worried to death! He's in the pool." The wolf howl at the mortuary was another that got me chuckling, and a tip-off of the humor to follow.

Description : A surprise sleeper hit when released in 1992, this romantic fantasy works as a comedic adventure and a gentle tearjerker thanks to Mel Gibson's appealing performance. He plays Daniel, a daring test pilot who is deeply distraught by the apparent death of his girlfriend, Helen, in 1939. Feeling little reason to live, he volunteers for a pioneering cryogenics experiment and is thawed out 50 years later by two young boys. They bring the confused pilot home to Nat's single mom, Claire (Jamie Lee Curtis). There's a hint of romance, but Daniel desperately needs to know if Helen really died in 1939, and he discovers that love has a way of surviving a half-century leap in time. The premise is hokey and certain plot details are conveniently ignored, but Gibson, Curtis, and Elijah Wood (as Nat) hold it together with irresistible charm and just the right balance of fantasy and drama. --Jeff Shannon

Better romantic and die than pathetically mute
A very touching film because of some extremely sentimental and poignant elements. The girl that holds your heart and to whom you cannot propose crosses a road and gets hit by a truck. Coma..., irreversible..., they say. Better get frozen for later than live through this death. Frozen by some doctor who dies and leaves you behind and you are abandoned in a hangar. A couple of naughty boys revive you and then the real nightmare starts. They all believe you are nuts of course, except the mother of one of the boys, a nurse by profession he saves from an ex-whatever who wants to rape her. Finding your identity after 53 years in ice, that's hard. But there is a slight problem with Dorian Gray's picture. You are the picture and your age shows fast. Will he find and marry his sweetheart and is she still alive? Will he escape the cops and the doctors? Who knows? What will the little boy who revived him do? Nothing to say here. Just keep in mind this film is a piece of romantic beauty and that's all. The visit of the air force base I remember I must have done it in the same period, around 1990, one or two years more or less. That was a funny experience and I would have loved meeting Mel Gibson in one of the jets. But well no luck boy. Mel Gibson is nothing but a celluloid baby who has no real existence and his life is a dream and in this case the dream could have turned into a nightmare. Mel Gibson is a very flexible actor and manages romantic situations or situations with kids just as well as he does mad situations with Max and his tribe, not to speak of the mythic religious rewriting of the passion or the whole cosmos. There is something like a certain Connors and Schwarzenegger in that Gibson, even if he is a difficult spouse to get a divorce from. Back to the future then.
