BBC Production...Excellent
Have both the BBC production & the movie. Wonderful book brought to life in both versions.

One with an older Elizabeth Bennett & a faithful adaptation of the book.

The other with a young Keira Knightley, some changes to the story, but nonetheless an absolutely stunning movie.

I recommend both versions.

It doesn't get anymore complete than this one.
If you want only one dvd documentary on Titanic, I recommend this one. It's very comprehensive and if you're not a Titanic guru, might find it long and boring. But you won't get a more complete story, history, and detail than this one. A lot to digest, but it'll all sink in.

My only wish was to be in widescreen and high def blu ray, but the picture quality is like 480i. It's really a series of 3 programs, released different times, '94, '98, and part 3 was released '02, so you will get info on Cameron's Titanic and its impact in part 3.

Description : He is the world's most influential and admired writer, a man whose imaginative genius still moves us, nearly four centuries after his death.William Shakespeare's tumultuous life produced an unmatched legacy of drama and poetry. But the Bard's own story remains, for the most part, a mystery. Piece together the clues of Shakespeare's identity, from his comfortable youth in Stratford-on-Avon and his marriage to an older woman at 18 to the night of carousing that led to his death at age 52. Film excerpts, dramatic readings and location footage provide a glimpse into his little-known- life and his astonishing 20-year career as a playwright and actor.Turn back the pages of time for a remarkable portrait of William Shakespeare the greatest writer the English language has ever known.

Good overview of the Bard's life
I regularly teach my college's Introduction to Shakespeare class, and have found this to be a very good overview of the Bard's life and times. Micheal Wood's film on Shakespeare is also excellent, but that one is much too long to show in class. This A&E Bio, however, is the perfect length; coming in at about 50 minutes, it's ideal for showing towards the start of the semester. It includes good visuals and images, and includes short clips from several well-respected Shakespeare scholars.

I would also like to address the issue of Shakespeare's sexuality and his relationship with the Earl of Southampton, since several reviewers mention this in a dismissive way. I think that not introducing this aspect of Shakespeare's life to our students does them a great disservice. Literary scholars like Stephen Greenblatt (of Harvard University) and Stephen Orgel (of Stanford University) have done much research into the sexual norms of Shakespeare's life and period, and most gender and Renaissance studies scholars concur that Shakespeare was most likely bisexual, and that sexuality was understood differently during the Renaissance -- as more of a continuum. When we study sonnets like Sonnet 20 ("A woman's face with Nature's own hand painted / Hast thou, the master-mistress of my passion"), I think that there is ample enough evidence that Shakespeare had a relationship with another male. To dismiss this or not address it in class reflects ignorance of the current state of literary scholarship, as well as homophobia.

The Golden Era; the "Luckiest Generation"!
David Halberstam breaks all of the old boundaries by displaying what life was really like in the 1950s; the era of atomic bombs, racial tension and mothers in pearls and high heels.

The footage, vintage photos and first-person accounts all add up to make for great viewing pleasure! I am a Baby Boomer and this series of videos shows how life really was back in the Golden Era when us Boomers were called "the luckiest generation" because we were born into a post-war world where our parents had much more money than their parents. Life was grand; we had Walt Disney, Levittown and stay-at-home mothers who always greeted Dad with a smile and each child with kiss, a cookie and a glass of milk from a quart glass bottle! We enjoyed luxuries our parents never had experienced and they spoiled us. They wanted new ranch houses and good schools, so suburbia popped up to accommodate the ever-growing need for housing created by the post-war economic boom.

David breaks the rules and stereotypes set forth by so many other people who considered the 1950s the best time in America!

India Drama During English Rule
Among the classic installments which aired on PBS Masterpiece Theater over the past 25 years, THE JEWEL IN THE CROWN is one of the best. Although this series first aired in 1984, this multi-layered story about life in India during the 40's continues to pack a powerful and complex dramatization about inter-racial relationships, social and cultural prejudice, classicism, bigotry, hypocrisy, and the effect of imperialism of the British Raj on India, its princely states, and its people.

This ambitious epic tackles intricate details about the lives and customs of the ruling high caste Hindu class, and the British who ultimately control and rule their country. Yet, accurately interwoven is the story about the political mood of India; clashes between Hindu and Muslim, strife between the militant rebels and the followers of Gandhi at the height of India's struggle for self-rule and independence.

Equally compelling, THE JEWEL IN THE CROWN is also a story about the idiosyncrasies and fallibility of human nature; expertly portrayed by a cast of exception actors: lust for power, hedonism/sadism, vanity, narcissism, deception, cruelty and envy, but also honor and loyalty. The host of characters are unforgettable, and you will long remember the interrelationships of the many individuals who emerge as heroes/heroines, conspirators, villains, martyrs, and the 'righteous'.

This DVD mini-series includes four disks, and the quality was very good.

If you are a fan of classic PBS mini-series, I urge you to include this DVD box set in your collection.

Description : " His pacifist philosophy brought one of the world's great powers to its knees. He proved that violence is not the only road to change. Mahatma Gandhi's life was a study in contrast and paradox. He saw himself as doing God's work, yet recognized only personal conscience as the highest authority. He was a charismatic leader of millions who confounded intellectuals. He took a vow of abstinence, but in old age welcomed young women into his bed! BIOGRAPHY profiles the small man who took a great nation on his shoulders and changed the world. Trace his rise to power and fearless campaign of truth, non-violence and non-cooperation with injustice that defeated the British Empire. Biographers offer insight into his surprising personal life, while historians explore his remarkable accomplishments. Hear from his grandson, Arun Gandhi, and, in a rare interview, the Dalai Lama reflects on Gandhi's incredible life and enduring legacy. From the formation of his philosophy to changing the face of the world, this is the complete saga of the Pilgrim of Peace Mahatma Gandhi."
