| Reviews : { Rating: 3.5 out of 5 } | What is all the fuss about? I had been avoiding this video recording for years because the reviews here are mostly mediocre at best. I decided to watch it on the Met's website, and I was very pleasantly surprised, and equally entertained. Here are my rebuttals to some of the common complaints: Leonora - Eva Marton is hardly "past her prime" here as she has been labeled. She was in her mid-forties, which is when a woman's voice is often at its best. The Verdi repertoire is not her strength, and she misses some important notes, but her singing is still quite beautiful and powerful. She also gives Leonora a depth of character that other sopranos who may sing this role better do not deliver. Her overall performance trumps the faults. Manrico - It is fairly well known that Luciano Pavarotti's acting skills are not what made him famous. Yes, he stands and sings most of the time. It does not seem to bother people much, and it certainly did not bother me here. His singing is fabulous. Count di Luna - Sherril Milnes is a bit mature for this role, but the singing is still top-notch. I would not call him a weak link. The set - Simple, with different back drops added, making for easy and quick scene changes in this opera of four Acts with two scenes each. No problem. To sum up, this is good, old-fashioned grand opera from a house that is known for some of the best opera in the world. I consider myself fairly picky, and I am not one to gush about every show I see. This Trovatore has plenty to offer, and I believe I will watch it again to relive the thrill. Recommended. |

| Description : | This classic production of Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria ("The Return of Ulysses") from the 1985 Salzburg Festival updates the Renaissance orchestration to a distinctly modern sound but conveys the musical and dramatic power of Monteverdi's masterpiece with impressive impact. The new orchestration by one of the 20th century's most accomplished opera composers, Hans Werner Henze, was commissioned because existing manuscripts lack orchestral details. The effect is hybrid, but it works. Michael Hampe's staging focuses on the interactions of the characters without trying to create a realistic sense of period and environment. This is effective in a work of art that has roles for gods (Neptune, Minerva) as well as abstractions (Time, Human Frailty). Jeffrey Tate conducts with a fine sense of the proper style, and the singers fit impressively into their roles. Notably fine performances by Thomas Allen as the returning warrior, Ulysses, and Kathleen Kuhlmann as his long-suffering wife, Penelope, are set off by a superb supporting cast. --Joe McLellan |
| Reviews : { Rating: 4.0 out of 5 } | One of the best operas on DVD This is one of the best operas on DVD! Buy it, enjoy it! Outstanding performance of the hole cast. Daphne Evangelatos and Thomas Allan are really fabulous. The orchestration by Hans Werner Henze is full of emotions, fits perfect and is an great bonus to the beautiful Monteverdi basis. If you like the pure Monteverdi, you will love this Monteverdi-Henze mixture. The staging is really poetic and beautiful made. |

| Description : | All the ingredients for Rossini's prime comedy are present and expertly mixed in this 1987 Glyndebourne Festival Opera production: a Figaro (John Rawnsley) extroverted, ingenious, energetic, and vocally resplendent; a Rosina (Maria Ewing) fresh and sweet but steel-sinewed in her determination to have her own way; a Count Almaviva (Max-Rene Cosotti) who has not only the vocal lightness and agility his bel canto music requires, but a fine sense of humor and the ability to perform a good drunk scene. Ferruccio Furlanetto and Claudio Desderi are equally adept in their supporting buffo roles. This production is a joy to the eye as well as the ear. Everybody looks right for his or her part; the costumes are elegant and evocative of the story's time and place; the scenery, indoors and out, will evoke Seville for anyone who has seen that unique city. It is all brought together and given point and perspective by Sylvain Cambreling's idiomatic conducting and John Cox's deft staging. --Joe McLellan |
| Reviews : { Rating: 4.0 out of 5 } | Everything but the casting. I'm omitting a star for each miscast baritone in this opera. The staging is innovative. The orchestra is sublime. The set is pleasing with its view of the city behind the room in question. Rosina is captivating and engaging, visually and vocally. Basilio is a hoot, a good-looking man who dirties up nicely and plays the homicidal maniac of character assassination with comic glee. Almaviva is a sweet-voiced lyric tenor capable of both of ardour and light runs. Unfortunately, the title role itself is miscast. So is the villain. it would have been a much better production on the whole if the singers playing Figaro and Bartolo had switched roles. John Rawnsley is a wonderful Rigoletto, but vocally, he's just not a Figaro. He's a dramatic baritone, whereas Figaro, with all his runs, really needs to be a lyric. Rawnsley overpowers Cossotti in "All'idea di quel metallo" and completely fails to keep pace with Maria Ewing in "Dunqu io son"; all his fast notes turn to mud, and Figaro really has too many fast notes to let that slide. This role demands that rare thing, a baritone capable of clear, light, quick runs--such as Claudio Desderi. Meanwhile, Claudio Desderi has a beautiful voice and good agility (not to mention diction), but he is not a Bartolo. He is looks too fresh-faced (I'm guessing he was about 35 at the time), too good-looking except for a bit of a paunch, too benign, and far too melodious to be believable as this character. In fact, the role is staged to make Bartolo something of a softie--his response to "La Calunnia" is not so much impatience as repugnance--but this man would never try to force his unwilling ward to marry him in the first place. Bartolo should really be more loud and blustery--characteristics amply shown by John Rawnsley. What were they thinking? Oh well, too late now. I would advise renting or borrowing this one first, and only buying it if you can live with the defects described above. Luckily for me, I borrowed it from my local library. |

| Description : | Cheered by critics and audiences everywhere, IL POSTINO (THE POSTMAN) is the record-breaking Academy Award(R)-winning romantic comedy that delivers heartfelt laughs! Mario is a bumbling mailman who's madly in love with the most beautiful woman in town ... and who's too shy to tell her how he feels. But when a world-famous poet -- Pablo Neruda -- moves into town, Mario is inspired. With Neruda's help, he finds the right words to win the woman's heart! This unforgettably funny comedy proves that passion ... with some artful deception ... can win the most improbable love! |
| Reviews : { Rating: 4.5 out of 5 } | Delightful Foreign Film I can not recall a foreign film that was as delightful and unimposing, nor as brilliant and enjoyable, as Il POSTINO. The main character, a son of a poor fisherman, Mario Ruopollo won our hearts with his meek and timid persona, his off-beat humor, and his passionate desire to become an artist and poet as he develops a relationship with the famous international poet Pablo Neruda, who lives in exile in the small seafront Italian village where Mario lived. Who can forget Mario's unassuming personality as he humbly tries to win the affection of the local beauty, and also win the respect of the famous poet, Neruda. The scenes of him trying to create metaphors in his love letter to his sweetheart was especially moving. Also, the cinematography of the beautiful Italian shoreline was breathtaking, and was in a sense yet another 'character' in the story ... because these scenes accentuated the splendor and passion of Mario and his desire to be a 'poet'. Il POSTINO will stay with you long after you've seen the film. This delightful film is available for a reasonable price on DVD. Maizie Lucille James July 12, 2010 |

| Description : | Originally broadcast on network television in 1996, this tape might almost be seen as a companion to William Shatner's Star Trek Memories. Indeed, the companionship is so close that, on occasion, the two share anecdotes, film clips, and even phraseology. Constructed as a tribute hosted by Ted Danson, it features ample helpings of classic Star Trek, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space 9 and Star Trek: Voyager TV shows, as well as the various Star Trek movies, in several well-crafted montages of film clips. All of the principals are on hand (live or on tape) and a number of them give speeches, along with such celebrities as Jerry Stiller (who riffs on the depth of his Star Trek obsession) and Joan Collins (who recalls her role in the popular 1967 Star Trek episode "The City on the Edge of Forever"). There are, in fact, probably too many speeches--and what was the deal with that Voyager skit featuring the cast of Frasier? High point: a clip from The Simpsons, spoofing the movies featuring the original (and aging) cast. --Marshall Fine |
| Reviews : { Rating: 2.5 out of 5 } | Star Trek Hits A Super Nova Counting the WORST episodes of DS9,Voyager or Enterprise combined, this has to be THE WORST of all Star Trek related material in existance,by no means to be compared to the brilliant Star Trek: 25th Anniversary Special from five years earlier. This special represents the very worst of what happened to Star Trek after Gene Roddenberry died;the emphasis on a the financial francise results in this whole affair being total self parody. The whole affair is set in an award show format, already a warning sign for trouble and largely functions as a lot of canned jokes, lame parodies and 'First Contact' movie footage all delivered by teleprompter.Aside from a mildly campy "Frasier On Voyager" skit nothing on here is interesting or funny. Some of my opinion could be personal;I rate 1995-96 as one of Star Trek's worst periods creatively;saw the beginning the the creative decline of DS9,a lull in Voyager's and the release of what I believe is the worst Trek movie ever 'First Contact'.Personally while watching this I wanted to throw a rock at the TV.So.....if you are one of those people who hate Star Trek and want see a mean spirited parody this is for your.'30 Years & Beyond' is for the Craig Kilborn loving,Wesley Crusher hating,Dominion War LOVING Star Trek fan of the 90's.It's in the Trek related literature of the period too.So for many positive minded Trekkers such as myself who enjoy Star Trek for it's sense of hope rather then as a financial institution, this will only be a reminder of dark days for Star Trek. |

| Reviews : { Rating: 5.0 out of 5 } | Underrated Italian Epic Drama with amazing cast Sensual Man is the US VHS release of Italian Foreign film PAOLO IL CALDO from Italy 1973. Based on the novel by: Vitaliano Brancati Here's a short synopsis: Paolo comes from a long line of hot blooded, sensual Italian men - an there's no end to the predicaments into which he is driven. Even as a boy Paolo shows signs of the lusty habits he seems to have inherited from his grandfather and uncle. And when grown into full manhood, his rich irresponsible life is crowded with passionate sexual encounters including a former mistress of Mussolini and a communist female member of Parliament. Forever remaining unfulfilled due to the childhood romance with the family maid (ornella muti) that was broken off by his grandfather. - Brilliant thought provoking drama. Amazing production value and cinematography. Period piece drama. Must see scenes with Ornella Muti and Rossana Podesta - Rare Performance by Barabara Bach and Femi Benussi who plays the prostitute in the climatic scene of the film. Definite must see lost Italian classic. - sideshowvideo |

| Description : | A Simple Twist of Fate, Steve Martin's second adaptation of a classic (after his Roxanne-ization of Cyrano de Bergerac), is a melancholy, dramatic comedy about a recluse coming out of his shell. Suggested by George Eliot's Silas Marner, this isn't a cutesy picture akin to Father of the Bride. It's much more heartfelt, gentle, and satisfying, as long as you accept its traditional and predictable conclusions. Scorned by life, Michael McCann (Martin) lives in an auburn-tinted town and goes on with his colorless life. That is, until an abandoned child is left on his doorstep, and he adopts her. A custody battle ensues years later with far too many cheap, unconvincing courtroom dramatics in which money is the root of all evil, but the tone and wholesomeness of the story are special. Gabriel Byrne pulls off a nearly unplayable role as the town's aristocrat with fine underplayed support by Catherine O'Hara and youngster Alana Austin. The wonderful score is by Cliff Eidelman. --Doug Thomas |
| Reviews : { Rating: 4.0 out of 5 } | Don't expect comedy I saw this years ago and still can't forget how dismal and disappointing it was. While I understand actors want to stretch themselves and not always take on the same roles, anyone looking for a lighthearted comedy won't find it here. I don't agree it's gentle or heartwarming, although I'm obviously in the minority here. This isn't funny, it's merely drama and not especially quality drama either. I believe I donated it to Goodwill; hopefully someone with different tastes found it a good deal. |
