Right There!, Legally Blonde, Legally Blonde, Medley: Find My Way/Finale, |
| Description : | Like Wicked, this show is a girl-friendly extravaganza; the main difference--and it's a big one--is that the score of Legally Blonde is better. Based on the hit Reese Witherspoon movie, the zippy, frothy show tells the story of SoCal, pink-loving sorority girl Elle Woods, who enrolls at Harvard Law and goes on to prove that appearances can be deceiving. The opening number, "Omigod You Guys," gives an idea of what the Broadway-pop score by Laurence O'Keefe (Bat Boy--The Musical) and Nell Benjamin is up to, embracing its over-the-top cheer with goofily infectious energy. Sure, a couple of numbers feel a bit derivative (the show with the witches has "Popular," this one has "Positive"), and the Celtic detour ("Ireland") is rather puzzling, but overall the songs are firing on all cylinders. Just check out the use of a marching band on "What You Want" for instance. Laura Bell Bundy (Amber von Tussle in Hairspray) is a charming Elle, and she delivers numbers such as "So Much Better" with the requisite elan. But this is not a one-woman show, and Bundy is surrounded by a crack team, including the endearing Christian Borle as Elle's love interest Emmett, power-piped Orfeh as hairdresser Paulette and up-and-comer Leslie Kritzer as Delta Nu's Serena. --Elisabeth Vincentelli |
| Reviews : { Rating: 4.0 out of 5 } | So Much Better Than Expected This 2007 musical version of the Reese Witherspoon film is energetic, light-hearted & fun. While I enjoyed seeing the production (starring the terrific Laura Bell Bundy), the score seemed somewhat unmemorable - until I got the cd. Some of the songs work better on stage (ie. "Bend and Snap"), but after a few listens, several of the songs emerged as favorites: Omigod You Guys Ireland So Much Better Legally Blonde Legally Blonde Remix This is not meant to be a thought-provoking show - just one to smile. |

| Description : | Sadly, Curtains is the final entry in the long and fruitful partnership of lyricist Fred Ebb (who died in September 2004) and composer John Kander. While the show doesn't reach the heights of the team's previous masterpieces, such as Cabaret and Chicago, it's certainly a lot better than, say, their middling 1997 offering Steel Pier. Deliberately old-fashioned (it even features a real overture, something that's fast becoming a rarity), Curtains is a whodunit rolled into a musical--or vice versa. Set in 1959 Boston, it takes place backstage at a singing-and-dancing Western corker titled Robbin Hood. Someone gets killed, and a show tunes-crazy homicide detective (David Hyde Pierce) is called in. The plot is just a pretext for a series of very entertaining, characteristically brass-heavy songs that may not have the bite of old Kander and Ebb but are still very catchy. Above all, Curtains is (both thematically and stylistically) a love letter to old-school showbiz, and it's delivered on a silver platter by a cast of pros that includes the aforementioned Hyde Pierce, Kander and Ebb habituée Karen Ziemba, endearing Jason Danieley and, a notch above the rest, Debra Monk. Unsurprisingly, she chews the scenery and spits it right back in a pair of rowdy numbers: "Show People" and "It's a Business." --Elisabeth Vincentelli |
| Reviews : { Rating: 4.5 out of 5 } | Pretty good Kander and Ebb I thought the score was pretty good, but not great. A problem seems to be having songs for a "lackluster" show within a show (Robbin Hood). The PRODUCERS did it much better. Still and all it's nice to have a traditional Broadway score. |

| Description : | The Pirate Queen, with a score by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg (Les Misérables, Miss Saigon), took a critical beating when it opened on Broadway, but as this catchy cast recording demonstrates, that reception was really unnecessarily harsh. Set in the 17th century, the show (which closed after only 85 performances) tells the story of Grace O'Malley (Stephanie J. Block), an Irish ship captain and pirate who defied Queen Elizabeth I (Linda Balgord). The combination of that setting with the fact that the producers also brought us Riverdance means an overall Celtic flavor. But fans of Boublil and Schönberg should not fear. The duo delivers plenty of the over-the-top, super-emotional power ballads they're famous for--it's hard not to wonder what Celine Dion would make of songs such as "Woman" or "I'll Be There" (the latter sung by a man, but no matter!). Special kudos to Balgord, whose deliciously campy stage portrayal of Elizabeth I comes across well on "The Waking of the Queen," "The Role of the Queen," and two harpsichord-driven, vibrato-laden duets with Block, "She Who Has All" and "Woman to Woman." Also of note to fans of traditional singing is the participation of Áine Uí Cheallaigh (known from Riverdance) on several tracks. --Elisabeth Vincentelli |
| Reviews : { Rating: 4.0 out of 5 } | Broadway not Chicago This album is good. If you saw the Original production, Pre-Broadway in Chicago, you will notice the differences that the show acquired for its Broadway production. It is a good representation of a show that appears to have lost its luster when moving from the Windy City to the Big Apple. My kids I I listen to the album over and over and cannot get enough of it. |

| Description : | The 2007 entry in Armin Van Buuren's State of Trance series takes awhile to get going, but eventually kicks in with the blissful epics that have made him one of the world's most popular DJs. On mix records, Van Buuren usually expresses the two sides of his DJ personality via the two-disc format; disc one is filled with frothy vocal trance, the other is populated with more progressive material. SoT 2007 stays true to form. This time out though, there's an obvious disparity in quality between the two. Van Buuren goes downright cheesy for his lighter disc one (called "on the beach"), and with a few fleeting exceptions like Kalopsia's "The Blizzard," it's pretty forgettable. However, the second, more progressive disc ("in the club") improves noticeably as AVB leads off with two self-produced bombs "Miserere" and "Rush Hour." It still has a high cheese level to be sure, but its excesses are cut with relative dark matter like the lovely mashup in the middle of the disc, consisting primarily of Reh Mundi's "Perspective" and Ronski Speed's "The Space We Are." As with contemporaries like DJ Tiësto, Van Buuren seems to believe he needs to be all things to all people, but his more commercial instincts are too pronounced here, leaving his more devoted fan base with only half a mix to enjoy. --Matthew Cooke |
| Reviews : { Rating: 4.5 out of 5 } | Fantastic I am somewhat newer to trance and am still getting accustomed to the lingo. I read some of the other reviews before I listened to the album. I agree that disc one, "On the Beach", is much more of a mellow trance; and of course, the name of the disc implies this. Most of the tracks are excellent--I just have to be in a certain mood to enjoy this time of trance. I absolutely loved the second disc, "In the Club". The tracks are out of this world! I was listening to it during my boring commute and was loving it. Track 12 flipped on, and all of a sudden, the whole album just seemed a hundred times better to me. Tracks 12 through 16 make up my personal favorite trance mix I've ever been exposed to out of all of my favorite DJ's--Tiesto, Buuren, PVD, and Micro. This made me feel 100% secure in giving the entire album five stars! |

| Description : | More than four decades after its Broadway debut, the Roundabout Theatre's 2007 revival of 110 in the Shade is a glorious showcase for soprano Audra McDonald, and an eloquent statement for an underrated and neglected work. Based on N. Richard Nash's play The Rainmaker, 110 in the Shade tells the story of a Texas town stuck in a blistering heat wave. Lizzie (McDonald), the daughter of a local widower (Broadway veteran and TV star John Cullum), has resisted all suitors, including the sheriff (Christopher Innvar), until a potential huckster named Starbuck (Steve Kazee) arrives in town promising to bring rain ("The Rain Song"). Just like Marian the librarian, Lizzie thinks she sees right through the scam ("You're Not Fooling Me"). McDonald shines in her solos ("Love, Don't Turn Away," "Old Maid"), but Cullum, Innvar, and Kazee also get their moments either in duets with McDonald ("A Man and a Woman," "Simple Little Things," "Is It Really Me?") or by themselves. 110 in the Shade is obscure compared to Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt's most famous work, The Fantasticks--none of its songs ever entered the popular culture like "Try to Remember"--but it's a beautiful, evocative score that is tailor-made for McDonald's rich voice. It's also much more sumptuous than The Fantasticks, even in Jonathan Tunick's pared-down, Tony-nominated orchestrations. (Also nominated were McDonald, Cullum, lighting designer Christopher Akerlind, and the show itself for Best Revival of a Musical.) P.S. Classics puts out its usual first-rate package, with color photos, introduction by Peter Filichia, synopsis, and libretto. --David Horiuchi |
| Reviews : { Rating: 4.5 out of 5 } | Audra is yet again, outstanding I love this CD and all of the music is amazing. Audra does stand out but what else is new. Can't wait to see the show. Buy this CD and add it to your collection. |

| Description : | New York's Encores! series pursues its excavation of nearly forgotten musicals with this wonderful 1932 chestnut from Irving Berlin. Moss Hart's dementedly screwball book uses the frame of a show within the show to juxtapose references to both the top and the bottom of the heap as the Depression hits America. But of course entertainment is primordial throughout: As Berlin puts it in the determinedly hopeful "Let's Have Another Cup of Coffee," "Trouble's just a bubble,/And the clouds will soon roll by." The songwriter is at the top of his game here--this CD is wildly entertaining from beginning to end-and his command of the styles of the day is stupendous. He effortlessly goes from the gently acidic "Two Cheers Instead of Three" to the fevered love letter to a city that is "Manhattan Madness," from the operetta spoof "Crinoline Days" to "Torch Song," which sends up the tropes of the nominal genre (and is perfectly delivered by Felicia Finley, whose small part in The Wedding Singer had not prevented her from stealing the show). As is the case with Encores!, the cast-including musical-comedy experts Judy Kaye, Lee Wilkoff, and Walter Bobbie-is superb, and the large orchestra does justice to the period arrangements. --Elisabeth Vincentelli |
| Reviews : { Rating: 4.5 out of 5 } | Can't face the liner notes It is always terrific to have another "Encores!" recording; if one includes the Broadway transfer of "Chicago" this makes the thirteenth CD. The usual talent onstage and off are apparent, but the score this time seems distinctly second-rate Berlin (which is still beter than first-rate most everyone else). There is a sameness to the tunes and flatness in orchestration that is not apparent in, say, "Louisiana Purchase." Worst of all, though, is the sloppy packaging by the usually impeccable DRG: the tracking goes wrong midway (cuts 6 and 7 are linked together, throwing all subsequent numbering off); songs that are solos as presented are listed with multiple artists (e.g., "Crinoline Days," etc) and vice versa ("Soft Lights & Sweet Music"); an entire verse is left off of the libretto to "Crinoline Days;" and there are textual errors throughout ("I needed a faithful lover/And..." rather than "lover/Who." Not quite a glittering diamond, this is more of a rhinestone disc. |

| Description : | Asia, featuring members of Yes, ELP and King Crimson, was the first "supergroup" of the eighties. Their eponymous debut album, released in 1982, was a huge success racking up global sales in excess of 15 million copies. In 2006 the original four members reunited for the first time in over 20 years for a series of concerts in the US and the UK. The success of this tour led to a full-blown world tour running throughout 2007 in celebration of their 25th anniversary. This CD was recorded in Tokyo in March 2007 on the Japanese leg of the tour. The companion DVD will be released in Fall 2007 on Eaglevision. |
| Reviews : { Rating: 4.5 out of 5 } | And yet... I bought this CD mainly for a nostalgia factor, since my memories of past live albums should have kept me away from it. But it was the original band...To my surprise this is the best sounding live CD from the band so far. Wetton is much better here than Lake was in '83, and nobody wants to remember Moscow. The band seems relaxed, even in their solos, and there is a level of showmanship (which is expected), that really outshines other recordings. I generally dislike "unplugged" versions of anything, but I was surprised that "Don't Cry" and "the Smile has Left Your Eyes" sound extraordinary in their new incarnations. The real gem of the CD (worth the price of admission) is "In the Court of the Crimson King", a 4 1/2 minute rendition that sounds solid, with a guitar arrangement from Howe that sounds like a respectful hommage to both his own 70's work in Yes, and the intricate virtuosity of Fripp (Yes, I'm a Crimson fan). And now, the bad news... The voice and keyboards are a bit forward on the sound mix, and unfortunately some songs have the drums buried in an ancient tomb. I think Palmer's drum sound is a bit outdated, a pity because I love his playing on most ELP recordings (including the live ones). "Only time will tell" has the worst drum mix of the CD, hi-hats and cymbals are all over the place, when you hear them; and I refuse to think it's the drummer's fault (c'mon this guy played Prokofiev live!). Other than that "Roundabout" should have been rehearsed a bit, it's too erratic even at the slower tempo which they chose (listen to recent Yes live in "The House of Yes" for a killer version). The rest of the songs are fine, and I can actually confess that as a nostalgia item, it turned out be better than a lot of the stuff out there today! AR |
