Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon has no shortage of breathtaking battles, but it also has the dramatic soul of a Greek tragedy and the sweep of an epic romance. This is the work of director Ang Lee, who fell in love with movies while watching wuxia films as a youngster and made Crouching Tiger as a tribute to the form. To elevate the genre above its B-movie roots and broaden its appeal, Lee did two important things. First, he assembled an all-star lineup of talent, joining the famous Asian actors Chow Yun-fat and Michelle Yeoh with the striking, charismatic newcomer Zhang Ziyi. Behind the scenes, Lee called upon cinematographer Peter Pau (The Killer, The Bride with White Hair) and legendary fight choreographer Yuen Wo-ping, best known outside Asia for his work on The Matrix. Second, in adapting the story from a Chinese pulp-fiction novel written by Wang Du Lu, Lee focused not on the pursuit of a legendary sword known as "The Green Destiny," but instead on the struggles of his female leads against social obligation. In his hands, the requisite fight scenes become another means of expressing the individual spirits of his characters and their conflicts with society and each other. The filming required an immense effort from all involved. Chow and Yeoh had to learn to speak Mandarin, which Lee insisted on using instead of Cantonese to achieve a more classic, lyrical feel. The astonishing battles between Jen (Zhang) and Yu Shu Lien (Yeoh) on the rooftops and Jen and Li Mu Bai (Chow) atop the branches of bamboo trees required weeks of excruciating wire and harness work (which in turn required meticulous "digital wire removal"). But the result is a seamless blend of action, romance, and social commentary in a populist film that, like its young star Zhang, soars with balletic grace and dignity. --Eugene Wei |

I upgraded to Blu-ray from my well-worn DVD copy (the 2001 release). I have not seen the previous Blu-ray release that came as part of the three-pack, so my comments below compare the stand-alone Blu-ray to the DVD.
The Blu-ray transfer is a definite improvement over the DVD, though not to the degree of some other transfers I have seen. Much of the film was shot "soft" by Ang Lee to cover for wire-work and, basically, to suit his own taste. Those scenes remain soft on the new transfer. Not much if any of the grain has been removed and it occasionally flares up. So while it doesn't provide the "digital sharpness" (for a lack of a better phrase) of many recent releases, it does present what the director intended and I don't list that as a fault.
Black levels have improved and several scenes have had exposure levels altered (all for the better). Coloring remains much the same as the DVD. Most noticeably, the offensive random noise and dirt from the DVD release has been cleaned up. That in itself is a good reason to upgrade.
Sound is now in Dolby TrueHD and emphasizes the clash of swords a bit more but it is no huge improvement. I've never listened to the English audio track so I don't know if that's changed at all, but the sub-titles have been reworked and that is good news. It seemed easier to follow some of the plot nuances (like the master-pupil concerns) which I had to piece out over several previous viewings of the DVD. Extras are the same with one addition, a commentary track by Peter Pau (cinematographer) which is worth listening to.
Overall this is a definite improvement over DVD and fans should consider buying. I always thought the DVD rushed and beneath Sony for a film that won so many Academy Awards; this is a good step up. Oh, and Michelle Yeoh looks more gorgeous than ever in HD.

I LOVE THIS MOVIE its great, everyone should see this movie... However I bought this with the fifth element (remastered) on blu ray. The quality on the fifth element was AMAZING. Then I watched this and was rather disappointed. It looked better then the DVD but no where as spectacular as the fifth element was. Maybe they did it cheap and didn't remaster big trouble. I still enjoy it the quality is good worth a buy if your a fan of the movie and already have a DVD copy. If you have not seen it get it. |

This is a great movie of 2003 it is the only good pirate movie.
It was so good Johnny Depp was nominated for best actor but lost to Sean Penn.
This was not the only good movie of 2003 there were alot other exelent films in 03.

This set is as well done as the series. Having been a Seinfeld fan for years it is nice to have all the episodes plus the "extras. The set is very nicely boxed: there is a commemorative book that has some information about each episode, a sheet with a table of contents like listing of all the episodes, and the DVDs are in two binders, each disc in its own tray (less risk of scratching as with some other TV series DVD compilations). Each DVD offers the option to watch the episode alone, or with "Notes About Nothing" which is script on the screen throughtout the episode that gives further detail about the episode, the cast, the set, or background on whatever is being discussed on screen. This latter piece will probably be helpful for future generations watching the show that may not be aware of the events that were current and discussed at the time. Each DVD also has "extras": commentaries by the cast and staff on certain episodes, deleted scenes, bloopers, advertisements that were televised to promote the show at the time it was on (before syndication), interviews with the cast, writers, NBC and Castle Rock officials, and "inside looks" where cast and/or writers give insight into the development of that episode-a little background on how it was developed, obstacles, difficulties, etc. In summary, this is a very well done, comprehensive offering of the Seinfeld TV show. I would not have purchased it at full price, but it was an amazing deal on one of Amazon's deal-of-the-day offerings. |

This movie is no doubt one of the most underrated movies of 2001.Great music score and nonstop action.I know this movie was controversial but still the best.A great movie based on an actual event that occured in 1993.You won't be bored nor disappointed.Don't listen to the ones who gave it bad reviews unless It's about the DVD,VHS,or Blu-Ray.Once the movie starts,there are no studios logos at the beginning and they will appear after the credits and you'll just see the text at the beginning of the film that says"based on an actual event,".Go on and buy this film. |

This movie is twice as good when watched in Chinese with subtitles. Better yet, watch once with subtitles then again without to really bask in the massively epic cinematography. Some gorgeous shots of China in here, and many incredibly huge, tightly choreographed battle scenes.
The acting is very good in general, and Jet Li is a whole new category of solid here. Easily his best performance, and the direction is crisp and never sloppy or lingering, which makes everything including Li that much more captivating.
Didn't know this period of Chinese history much; if I had, I'd probably worship this film. As it is, I liked it a lot anyhow. The script has some very fine lines and ideas as well; many deep issues of society, war and brotherhood are explored in ways Hollywood never would.
The blu-ray picture is pleasantly grainy, looking very film-like, not CGI in any way. The BD also has a number of good extras. A good package, all in all.
But do NOT watch with dubbing! The English voices are ok but the original voices add so much more drama and reality to the proceedings (and I love subtitles like "[whinnies]" when the horses make a noise). I watched both dubbed and original and Chinese is absolutely the way to go here. Worlds of difference.
If you like epic in most any way, and don't mind a falling head or two (hundred), Warlord is definitely recommended.
