There is nothing I can add to the film reviews, 2001 is simply one of the all-time all-times! I also have what I believe to be the same video scan on the two-disk DVD, and the picture quality of the Blu-ray is noticeably better than the DVD. Unlike many Blu-rays, the disk starts quickly and goes directly to the film without previews or elaborate animated menus plus, you can even stop and resume. Why can't they all be like that? |

I'm a huge George Romero fan, but I have actually never seen the 1973 original movie. So, I will be judging this film without the baggage of history or nostalgia. I actually really enjoyed "The Crazies" (2010). Briefly (very mild spoilers ahead), it is the story of a small town that gets infected with a virus and people start going crazy. A military/mercenary (blackwater-esque) presence puts the town in quarantine. The people not infected have escape both the crazies trying to kill them and the military trying to "contain" them. The film was a little slow going at first, and I found some of the acting a little choppy/hokey; but by half-way through the film I was totally drawn in and compelled to keep watching. The scares were tense and fun. The gore was decent and enjoyable, but not over-the-top. The CG wasn't obnoxious or distracting. Overall, I'm glad I watched the movie. I would maybe even watch this film a second time. I think, as is typical with a film like this, my only problem with "The Crazies" was the lack of crazies. They drop out of the story for what seems like long sections of the film. I would have added in one or two more scenes with them, especially with the main characters walking out exposed on an open road. I actually think there's a plausible reason for this, but to go in to it I would have to enter "spoiler" territory. Overall, an enjoyable 3.5 out of 5. Rounding up to 4 because of the "DVD extra" that was a very nice tribute to George Romero. |

Also, on the packaging and here on Amazon the aspect ratio is wrongly listed as 2.35:1. It is not. It is actually 1.85:1. I'd give the movie itself 4 stars, but my review here is just for the Blu Ray. Zero stars. |

I just thought I'd take a look at some of the reviews here, after having watched the movie, and the review seem to focus on the "comedy" aspect of this movie. Also, the only quote featured on the packaging is from Rolling Stone, which says "Hardcore hilarious. It slaps a big, fat, goofy smile on your face." I just wanted to add, though, that there is a LOT of gunplay and violence in this movie... i.e., we, along with Rogen's misanthropic process server, witness someone being shot in the head and we see the blood spatter as well. There are fist fight sequences, car chases with guns blasting, people being shot at close range, a piece of Rogen's ear gets blown off, we see the bloody close-up, and much more. If that matters to you. Apparently there are a lot of tokers who love this kind of Tarantino-esque stuff along with their pot-themed Apatow comedy, but it mostly just didn't work for me. There are definitely some hilarious moments in this film, but the comedy/violence hybrid falls flat, and it's nearly impossible to endure two hours of seth rogen's bearish voice repeatedly screaming "aaaaugh!!" and other things throughout the many action parts of the movie. High marks, though, for James Franco's performance, bring some nuance to a pot dealer, to Danny McBride's bizarre distributor Red, and to Ed Begley Jr's cameo. 2-1/2 stars for the good parts! |
