Chabrier's Confections
I've been listening to Paray's celebrated recording of Chabrier's orchestral works for over a decade, so it was time for a change. This compilation looked promising, as it presented the familiar repertoire with two important additions--the largely unknown Lament for English horn and orchestra, and the Prelude pastoral. If nothing else, I would have two rarities to add to my collection.

After a handful of listens, I have returned the Paray collection to its case. Jean-Marc Jordan's account with the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic captures the sheer joy and sensuous color of Chabrier's orchestral art. While Paray is masterful, sometimes his disc is a little abrasive and narrow; these accounts are more spacious, and at times a bit more slow, letting Chabrier's gorgeous melodies unfold. His most famous piece, Espana, is given a beautiful performance, fiery and colorful, playing up its picture postcard aspects, while highlighting its sheer originality. Yet the true masterpiece of this collection is the Suite Pastorale, based on his Scenes Pittoresques for piano. This is the best version I've ever heard; the poetry shines through in the opening "Idylle," which may be my favorite French orchestral miniature. The melody is so charming and wistful, yet it has such personality--only Chabrier could have written it. This is contrasted by the rambunctious "Danse villageoise," with its remarkable clarinet opening. A lullaby follows, the utterly captivating "Sous-bois," which is then concluded by the breathtaking "Scherzo-valse," which the orchestra plays to the hilt. A remarkable performance on every level.

The rest of the disc is just as successful, particularly as it offers some out-of-the-way repertoire. We have the two staples of most Chabrier collections, the dances from "Le Roi malgre lui," the Dance slave and the Fete Polonaise. Spot-on performances and great attention to detail; not even Offenbach could write such infectious dance tunes. Then we have the gorgeous orchestration of his famous piano miniature, "Habanera." I had only heard the piano version, and was amazed to hear it transcribed so masterfully (by Chabrier, no less); its origin is completely masked by Chabrier's skill in clothing the familiar melody in a unique orchestral garb (it almost sounds like a different piece). The famous Joyeuse marche is played with gusto, and again, is among the best versions I've heard. The two new pieces are very worth getting to know: the Lament is the odd piece out in this collection, as it is pure melody, and a little less characteristic of Chabrier; nevertheless, it's a gorgeous piece, using the English horn effectively in dialogue with the orchestra (though the piece sounds less like a lament than a gentle elegy). The Prelude pastoral is a major piece--dramatic, ambitious, and somewhat Wagnerian. The notes don't tell me much about the piece's origin, though it sounds like it could have come from an opera, as it has some affinity with his overture to Gwendolyn.

Brilliant job Naxos for issuing this wondeful compilation. My only qualm is the time: at 60'42, you could have made room for the overture to Gwendolyn (which Paray plays magnificently), the orchestration of Bouree fantastique, and/or the Larghetto for horn and orchestra (which I've never even heard). Oh well, another disc?

Absolutely wonderful recording!
I read the reviews on this CD which were superb, many declaring this to be the greatest Mozart horn recording of the century. I believe they are correct. I have played this many times now and just love listening to it!

Dennis Brain...too long gone, but left us this blessing to remember him by!
As a horn player in high school, we were often asked to play from the Mozart Horn Concertos for State solo and Ensemble contest. Oh, the beautiful tones, clear crisp sounds heard from Dennis Brain are the best I've ever heard! It is unfortunate that this man's talents were removed from the world far too early; this recording, though done long before current stereophonic sound, is awesome and certainly should be first and foremost in all collections of those who feel they want the best of the best in a french horn player. RIP, my friend!

Very Entertaining Opera.
This opera may not have well known or most beautiful melodies, which is the only reason I can't give it five stars; but the plot, the voices, the performances and the costumes are all outstanding. Most important, this DVD has subtitles; so that one can understand the story which, in the case of operas, makes a world of difference.

Cover fix
For those who are upset about the terrible CD cover "art" there's a very quick solution (which might make you kick yourself for not having thought of): flip the booklet over and put it back in the jewel box. Then a nice photograph of Hovhaness will face out with the green whatever-it-is facing in.

What staccato triplets?
The first review complains of sloppy oboe attacks in the "staccato triplets" in the fourth movement of the B flat quintet. I suspect he means the sixteenth note passages. There is no sloppiness there. The performances are delicious tributes to the father of the wind quintet.

Description : Pianist Uri Caine has done wonders with the compositions of Gustav Mahler (Urlicht: Primal Light) and Richard Wagner (Wagner e Venezia). Nothing Caine's done, however, reaches the dynamic apex captured in the nearly 160 minutes of music on his Goldberg Variations, one of the best tributes to Bach available outside the realm of straight-ahead classical music. Dozens of musicians and settings, from the Baroque to the bombastic, make this two-CD set an unabated wild ride. --Andrew Bartlett

A different take on the Goldbergs
Uri Caine presents us with another take on a classical composition, this time singling out JS Bach's Goldberg Variations for the treatment. If you love the Goldbergs as much as I do you will find this funny, touching and also revealing at the same time. It is irreverent whilst being most reverential, paying close heed to the heart of the text. I know some friends find it dificult to listen to all at one sitting but warm yourself with it and to it and you'll not be disappointed.

Magic Mushroom Music
"Little Mushroom" - Schwammerl - was one of Franz Schubert's nicknames among his cafe-crawler friends. Little Franz was a bit of a carouser, possibly a heavy drinker, certainly a highly sociable guy who burned his candle at both ends. "Hip", in short, and not the puling sufferer that late romantic biographers portrayed. Even the pitiful image of his death from syphilis, contracted from a single liaison with a prostitute, turns out to be a flimsy mythification; there is no incontrovertible evidence that syphilis caused his death, or even that syphilis was the "serious illness' that struck him in his early twenties. The poignant melancholy that supposedly pervades his music may in fact be an artifact of performance. No composer has ever been as constrained as Schubert by tradition ... posthumous tradition that is.

Schubert's Opus 99 Trio for Fortepiano, Violin, and Cello is as exuberant and expansively joyous as its performers choose to make it. In this interpretation by La Gaia Scienza, it ripples with vigor and flexes its biceps in a sunny open field. Opus 99 and Opus 100, companion trios, were written more or less back to back in the last year of Schubert's life, and Opus 100 was the chef d'oeuvre in the successful public concert-hall performance of his own works that Schubert conducted that year. Opus 100 has remained the better known of the two trios, the one whose melodies all Schubertians hum in the shower, but Opus 99 is every bit as wonderful a piece. I've already reviewed the separate CD of Opus 100, performed by Gaia Scienza. The really good news is that both CDs, both trios, are now available together in a single package.

Since Schubert was, as I said, "hip" in the manner of his generation in Vienna, it's thoroughly appropriate that his music be appropriated by HIP performers. "Historically Informed Performers" like La Gaia Scienza, I mean. Paolo Beschi plays an unmodified 18th C cello with gut strings, Stefano Barneschi likewise a violin such as Schubert would have known, and Federica Valli plays an 1815 fortepiano made by Johann Schanz, of precisely the sort Schubert favored. The timbre of that fortepiano is as sweet and transparent as water in one of the fountains of Schloss Schönbrunn, but even more essential to the brilliance of this recording is the balance of the trio ensemble, in which the 'vocal' phrases of the strings are not overwhelmed by the saturated resonances of a modern piano. Once you've heard this performance of Opus 99, I doubt you'll ever want to hear the trio on a-historical instruments again. But you can listen to the 'samples' here on amazon and decide for yourself.

Buy this for the Dukas, Marais, Mozart
As others have said, the recordings listed in my title are sublime. Unbelievable that all are live!

Only four stars for this release due to the age of the recording. For most of these pieces Mono is fine.

The Beethoven Quintet is no doubt extraordinary, but the age of the recording makes for muddy sound.
The engineers have done a fine job. But the instruments blend together and somehow are indistinguishable
one from another (probably due to great ensemble playing). Only at the first break does it become obvious
that this is a live recording.

This Brahms is not at all to my taste. I much prefer Brahms & Beethoven: Music for Horn by Lowell Greer.
The Brahms here sounds like a disjointed mish-mash - with only the adagio to recommend it. As recorded,
it is very horn-forward and does not sound at all like Brahms. My opinion, take it for what it's worth.

The Dukas and Marais are worth the price of admission (neither would be better in stereo), and the
Mozart is a wonderful bonus.
