Description : Bryn Terfel is the most recent in a long line of great Welsh singers (and certainly one of the greatest)--a people who proverbially are "born with music in the blood and poetry in the soul." Here, he sings the songs of his native Wales: hymns, folksongs, art songs, tender lullabies, yearning songs of love and homesickness, and heroic, defiant patriotic songs--including the Welsh National Anthem, which opens and closes the program. Terfel's voice, flowing out effortlessly like a golden stream, is phenomenal for its incomparable beauty, its range of dynamics, its inflection, and its intensity; his expressiveness is simpler and more natural than usual, and seems really to come straight from his soul. In honor of another great Welsh tradition, two splendid male choirs accompany him; in the fine orchestra, the English horn and harp soloists are particularly striking. The only false note on this heartwarming disc is the lush, garish orchestration, which runs counter to the ingenuous spirit of the songs and often almost resembles a soundtrack. The prime example is the lovely lullaby that's popular in English as "All Through the Night." Terfel sings it with wonderful simplicity; the orchestration is out of a grade-B movie. No wonder, therefore, that the more magical moments are those in which Terfel sings alone with a cappella chorus, harps, or piano; especially in the quiet, inward songs. The accompanying booklet is done beautifully, with stunning photographs of the Welsh countryside, a brief account of Welsh history and music, and texts in both Welsh and English. --Edith Eisler

We'll Keep A Welcome - Bryn Terfel

And what a welcome it is. A wonderfully nostalgic reminder of home, Wales.

I knew of Bryn Terfel's talents well before purchasing this produce, so the beauty of his voice came as no surprise to me. However, I was not prepared for the tears which it brought to my eyes as I recalled my childhood years.

I would recommend this CD to anyone, Welsh or otherwise who appreciates good music and a wonderful voice.

Description : This disc is obviously aimed at the world-music audience, if one judges from its title and the subtitle, "Folk-Inspired Music for Guitar." But that shouldn't dissuade listeners interested in more serious music. Isbin has collected original pieces and arrangements from Spain, Latin America, Appalachia, Ireland, Israel, and Greece--all of them quite lovely. It's really amazing to hear, for example, the "Londonderry Air," better known as "Danny Boy," in such a sympathetic arrangement by the late Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu. She plays with such technical mastery that you wind up taking it for granted, while appreciating her songful delivery of this highly varied program of music, which was mostly first intended for the human voice. The uncommonly attractive booklet, including photos of Isbin as a world traveler, is another asset to this fine program, as is Teldec's realistic recorded sound. --Leslie Gerber

"Dreams of a World": A Dialogue...
I was introduced to Ms. Isbin's music this winter during a trip when a friend had "Dreams of a World" on for 3 days straight, dawn to dusk. Typically, after listening to the same CD twice, one gets bored or annoyed. Yet, this was not the case; on the contrary "Dreams of a World" warmed us up --it was delicately beautiful. Ms. Isbin employs an astonishing pallet of colors, which she blends with unprecedented technical mastery and imaginative nuances throughout her oeuvre.

Cancion y danza for guitar, Agua E Vinho Mahar and Yerushala'im shel zahav are pieces which can easily be overly sentimental and languorous. Ms. Isbin keeps a pleasant balance between the melancholy in her phrasing, the underlying dynamism of her voice
and the warm character of the pieces. I can only recommend Dreams of a World to anyone in search of high quality music played by an artist, not merely a technician.

Description : Castor et Pollux is arguably Rameau's finest creation in the tragédie lyrique style. Its libretto, based in mythology, focuses on an unusual theme: the self-sacrificing love between Castor, who is mortal, and his immortal brother, Pollux. When Castor is killed while defending his beloved Télaïre from an attempted abduction, Pollux resolves to give up his immortality and take Castor's place in the Underworld. After passionate debate over who will live and who will die, the brothers are eternally united, transformed into the constellation Gemini. The strikingly luminous sets, depicting a stylized version of the constellation, give this fabulous production, staged by Pierre Audi and conducted by Christophe Rousset, a glorious 21st-century baroque look.

Sung in French with subtitles in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Dutch.

Who ruined this work of art?
I'll tell you. It was the choreographer. He insisted on assigning each character a dancer who would double as themselves. The dancer's role was to do all the acting through the awkward and laborious dancing. This means that while the events are actually happening to the singers, they can't act out about it. This was a grave error which manifested in a tedious, monotonous staging. You don't get to see any of the rage by those that have been crossed, nor do you get to see any sort of real jealousy or insanity by the one doing the crossing. The best scene is the funeral scene with the popular aria Tristes aprez. Under the proper direction, this opera could move you to tears. I love Rameau and all his work and this production put me to sleep. I so badly wanted to like this. If this was any one's first experience with a Rameau opera they would certainly be put off. The saving grace of this production is the perfect performance by the orchestra. Get the CD instead. Forget this and buy Platee by Rameau. It's the most entertaining piece of work that I own and everyone I've shown it to agrees.

Totally unexpected pleasure
Generally, efforts by opera singers to sing popular music are grotesque. Pavarotti, Tebaldi, Sills et al. seem to make music that wasn't that great to begin with sound worse than it is. And generally the voices of the popular stars of Broadway musicals(Fred Astaire, Rex Harrison) are so mediocre that the music they sing seems mediocre too. So what Thomas Hampson (and his expert arranger) have done with these songs of Cole Porter is little short of miraculous: In Hampson's incredibly beautiful voice (one of the voices of the century) and perfectly sympathetic styling, the shape and wit--the genius--of Cole Porter's musical imagination is revealed probably for the first time since they were written. An astounding accomplishment, and a delight to the mind and ear.

Description : Opera's most popular double bill, fondly known as Cav and Pag, can be a tawdry mess or, as in this performance of Pagliacci, a searing experience. Its power derives from an all-star cast headed by tenor Jon Vickers in the double role of betrayed husband, Canio, and tragic clown, Pagliacci. He’s a singer who blurred the division between reality and stage illusion in every role he assumed, thus taking an opera about that thin line between real life and stage artifice to heightened levels of intensity. Vickers is a force of nature, his big, brawny voice suffused with emotion. Here, his phrasing, textual precision, and timbral colorations expand the scope of the opera, making a moving tragedy out of Leoncavallo’s verismo melodrama. It helps that his colleagues are also in good form: Soprano Raina Kabaivanska is an excellent Nedda, Canio’s cheating wife, whose loyalty to her lover, Silvio, sends Canio into a murderous rage in the stage farce that parodies their real-life situation. She sings with refinement in the Act One love duet and with powerful desperation in Act Two. Baritone Rolando Panerai is a fine Silvio, and the double role of Peppe/Arlecchino is enhanced by the smooth tenor of Sergio Lorenzo. Peter Glossup is a convincing Tonio, the lascivious member of the troupe whose lust leads him to betray Nedda and set the tragedy in motion. Herbert von Karajan conducts the La Scala forces, guiding the mounting tension to perfection. He’s also credited with directing the film, based on Paul Hager’s stage production. Despite copious closeups, lip-synching to the prerecorded vocal performances is smoothly done. Like Pagliacci, this Cavelleria Rusticana was a La Scala production filmed in 1968. But the filming, directed by Ake Falck, disappoints. Another village melodrama of love, infidelity, and murder, it’s well sung, with mezzo Fiorenza Cossoto in the role of Santuzza, the betrayed heroine and a little-known but capable tenor, Gianfranco Cecchele, in the role of Turridu, whose love for Lola, soprano Adriana Martino, leads to the violent response of her husband, Alfio, acted by baritone Giangiacomo Guelfi. Karajan shines in the expansive Prelude and the beautifully shaped Intermezzo but the opera is undercut by a film with too many irrelevant scenic shots and an excess of tight closeups that have the effect of creating emotional distance rather than involvement. But if Cav underachieves, this Pag, dominated by Jon Vickers, is an unforgettable operatic experience. --Dan Davis

This DVD is in 4:3 format. Sound options include PCM Stereo and DTS 5.1 Surround. Subtitles include English, French, German, Spanish, and Chinese.

Vickers Pagliacci
Long awaited video and masterfully cinematographed. The interpretation of Jon Vickers in my opinion exceeds expectation as he infuses drama and presence and perfect melody in his "Vesti la giuppa". None of this irritating laughter that clashes with the intensity of the moment and takes away the pain that he tries to convey. Highly recommended video for anyone looking for excellent singing and direction.

[ ( O ) Order Tchaikovsky - The Sleeping Beauty / Kolpakova, Berezhnoi, Kunakova, Kirov Ballet ]
Description : The Sleeping Beauty is the grandest of all the surviving 19th-century ballets and the supreme achievement of the imperial Russian ballet. First performed in 1890 at the Maryinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, the ballet has been preserved in continuous performance by the company that created it. The way in which the heirs of the old imperial ballet continue to honor the choreographic genius of Marius Petipa and the glories of Tchaikovsky's score, means that The Sleeping Beauty is ideally to be seen in the interpretation of the Kirov Ballet whose performance in the company's 200th year in 1982 was captured in this presentation. Leading the cast is Irina Kolpakova, recognised as one of the former Soviet Union's greatest ballerinas and justly celebrated throughout the world for the beauty and clarity of her classic dancing in the role of Princess Aurora. With Sergei Berezhoi as Prince Desire and Lubov Kunakova as The Lilac Fairy.

Best Version on DVD
As a huge fan of Russian ballet, and The Sleeping Beauty in general, this DVD is the best full length Beauty we have available. Until they wise up and film the current Kirov/Mariinsky reconstruction fot he original 1890 production (you can find a glorious performance of Act III on the DVD New Year's Eve in St Petersburg), this probably will remain the best filmed version despite worthy and interesting productions on DVD from the Royal Ballet nad the Bolshoi.

This is the production Konstantin Sergeyev premiered in 1953, and has remained in the repertoire of the Kirov/Marrinsky since then and is something of a classic in its own rights. It's also, arguably but to my mind, the most faithful to the original Petipa choreography we have. Yes Sergeyev replaced a lot of the mime and made some other changes (some of which, like the new male variations, are, while far from authentic, admirable additions), but we get the basic text of this ballet down to all of the charming wedding divertisements, most not performed in the West.

Kolpokova was nearing the end of her career when this was filmed in 1983, and I admit the idea of a 50 year old Aurora can be off putting--but the lady dances spectacularly and is a great and welcome presence. Everyone else is in fine form--the men and the classic female corps of the Kirov in particular.

A must for any classic ballet lovers and Sleeping Beauty fans out there.

The Best of the Lot
I have chosen to review A Musical Tour of Paris first because it has some beautiful night video of Paris and the surrounding area. When I got my blu-ray player I realized that the entire musical journey series was released in 1080HD and has outstanding sound. If you play them on a regular DVD player you won't see them in HD. This is an interesting choice by Naxos, since they were all released in a 4:3 aspect ratio. If you have a 16:9 monitor, you should watch them in the original aspect ratio or the picture will be distorted. You can still get a beautiful picture in 4:3, but not as satisfying as a picture that fills the whole screen.
Naxos has made some other interesting choices. The menu system is crude, to say the least. Paris has music from 14 composers on this DVD from Wagner to Satie. If you know your classical composers, it's pretty easy to identify those two, but some of the others are problematical. A brief list of the locales appears before each chapter, but the compositions being played are not identified. Paris could be turned into a quiz show to guess which of the 14 compositions are being played at any given moment. You could read detailed information for each chapter before viewing the program, but unless you have a photographic memory, you will forget what you have read when you get to each chapter. This series reminds me of the old CD-ROMs which were packed with information that was difficult to access.
The Visions series is an excellent example of how a series like this should be integrated, with video, music and narration flowing naturally.
I have not been to Paris, but much is so familiar that you are unlikely to confuse the Eiffel Tower with Notre Dame. I have traveled around Spain, so it's easy for me to know whether I'm in Toledo or Cordova. If you're a world traveler, you may not have to be told what you're seeing at every moment.
This series could be improved, but despite its faults I keep buying and enjoying the DVDs.
