Description : "Casa" is the Portuguese word for "house." It's also the title of this melodic and moving tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim by the Oscar® and Grammy award-winning pianist-composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, Brazilian cellist Jaques Morelenbaum, and his vocalist wife, Paula. The Morelenbaums, who cofounded Quarteto Jobim-Morelenbaum, both worked with the maestro, and almost all of the tracks here were recorded in Jobim's Rio home. The CD contains fluid and florid renditions of bossa nova-era classics from the Jobim canon, from "Amor em Paz"--with Jobim's son Paulo on guitar--and "Bonita" to "Vivo Sonhando." It also unveils rare songs like "Chanson pour Michelle," a short and sweet composition written for a soap opera, and a never-before-heard work, "Tema para Ana," an intimate piano/cello duet. Sakamoto's spare and splendid pianisms ring from Jobim's piano. Morelenbaum's singing cello tones complement his wife's angelic Portuguese and English vocals. Together this talented trio--with occasional accompaniment by percussionist Marcos Suzano, guitarist Luiz Brasil, vocalist Ed Motta, and bassist Zeca Assumpçao--beautifully exposes the French influences of Satie, Ravel, and Chopin in Jobim's music. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

A Labor of Love
A recording devoted to the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim might seem a strange thing to find on Sony Classical, but that is what we have here, and it is a marvelous, magical, magnificent recording. Morelenbaum2/Sakamoto is the trio of Paula Morelenbaum, voice; Jaques Morelenbaum, cello; and Ryuichi Sakamoto, piano. This basic trio is augmented on several of the cuts by some other musicians, and much of the music was recorded in the late Antonio Carlos Jobim's home in Brazil, with Sakamoto playing Jobim's piano.

The idea of a cello in Jobim's music might seem a bit odd, but Jaques Morelenbaum brings a singing quality to his playing that sounds just right for this music. Paula Morelenbaum sings mostly in Portuguese, partly in English, and always with a real feel for this music. Sakamoto at times reminds us of Jobim's one- and two-finger style of playing, but at times plays with a rich and full style.

If you are at all a fan of bossa nova in general or the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim in particular, you really must get this recording. Making it was clearly a labor of love for all involved; "Tom" would surely approve.

Description : This enchanting, flavorful CD finds the ever curious Yo-Yo Ma traveling to South America, and Brazil in particular. The music varies from classical to samba to bossa nova; the combinations range from guitar, flute, and cello to female voice (the remarkable Rosa Passos), cello, guitar, percussion, piano, and bass; to simple cello and piano; to cello and two guitars. The overriding element is rhythm; each selection has a beat which is both infectious and sensual, but the contexts are splendidly varied. "Dansa brasileira" has a Debussy-like, impressionistic flavor, "Dansa negra" is sultry with an easy melody, "1 x 0" is a dance scored for guitar, percussion, and cello with a solo clarinet riff. It's impossible to get bored or tired listening to this creative CD; it's unique--just like Yo-Yo Ma himself--and endlessly surprising. It may not be quite what we'd call "classical" music, but it is many kinds of music, and they all will delight. The other musicians are as impressive on their instruments as Ma is with his cello, and that's saying a great deal. --Robert Levine

A Pleasant Curiosity
As it turns out, long before George and Ira Gershwin's golden age, when they were turning out musicals with tunes that are still performed today, George (sometimes with Ira, sometimes not) was writing tunes for musicals now forgotten, and recording them on piano rolls. By and large, the tunes on this album have not stood the test of time. Nobody now does Kickin' the Clouds Away, from Tell Me More (1925), or On My Mind the Whole Night Long, from Scandals of 1920.

Not surprisingly, George was a pretty good pianist. However, as one of the negative reviewers points out, George got a lot of assistance on some of these tunes from the piano roll technicians, who added a bunch of notes.

The piano playing on these recordings is fine, but not inspired. It is fun to hear a piano roll of George playing Rhapsody in Blue in 1927, and a good illustration of the versatility of the medium even then. I give it three stars for the music, and an additional star for the liner notes, which are excellent concerning George, piano rolls, and the instruments used then and now to convert them into sound.

Description : In his second volume of Chopin on a mid-19th-century Érard, Ax continues to demonstrate both the qualities of the instrument and his own artistry. The best test of the disc is the second movement of the concerto, in which Ax makes the Érard sing, plays with artistic flexibility and taste, and interacts beautifully and convincingly with the period-instrument orchestra. (Chopin's often-maligned orchestration sounds better than usual with these instruments.) Ax turns the waltz into a miniature tone poem in an exquisite performance. The early variations, which led Schumann to proclaim Chopin a genius, sound like fluff today, but these players make it entertaining. This disc is both an artistic experience and a musical education. --Leslie Gerber

Emanuel Ax plays Chopin on a historical Erard piano
Some ten years back - as the musical world commemorated then 150 years from the death of the Polish composer - Sony Classical released two wonderful CDs comprising Chopin works for piano and orchestra. First class performers were involved in the project: pianist Emanuel Ax, conductor Sir Charles Mackerras and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

In order to enhance the result of these recordings with regard to sound qualities and stylistic adequacy, a special historical piano was sought after and finally employed. Namely, an Erard produced in 1851 in London and kept in good shape at the University of Birmingham, in England. The liner notes in the accompanying booklet -, signed by the pianist, writer, music critic and `musical archeologist' John Bell Young - competently establish the historical context and the romantic atmosphere in which Chopin composed the pieces performed here and emphasize particular features of the chosen instrument for these recordings. Young even quotes Emanuel Ax who praised `this dulcet' Eratrd's sound richness, its dynamical range and interpretive valences and commented on the orchestral textures in Chopin's output.

By listening to this CD, one gets enraptured by Emanuel Ax's pleasure of playing such a wonderful music on this very special Erard with its differences between bass and treble, favoring improvisational abilities of the soloist, his taste for rubato and graceful touch. His fabulous technical skills and unmatched musicality are wonderfully highlighted in the daring opening movement of the E minor Concerto or in that heartfelt and sweet paraphrase after `La ci darem la mano'.

I discovered with true enchantment these recordings now when the musical world celebrates 200 years from Chopin's birth. I consider them a compelling, illuminating and reassuring Chopin interpretation. Recommended!

Prokofiev 1 & 5
Prokofiev's best symphonies are 1 & 5. You rarely see any other Prokofiev symphonies performed. The first symphony is called the "Classic" because it resembles a Haydn symphony with 20th century instruments. Prokofiev completed it in 1917. By contrast, the 5th symphony was written near the end of World War Two. Karajan's version of the 5th is from 1968 when he and the Berlin orchestra were at the height of their powers. The first symphony was performed later in 1981. The Berlin orchestra under Karajan's direction gives a great feel to both symphonies and I wanted to get it before it disappears from the catalog.

Description : After a period of semiretirement due to personal problems, Midori returns with this marvelous recital. The Franck sonata is, after Beethoven's Kreutzer, the best known--and just plain best--work for violin and piano. The finale features a tune so completely beautiful that you hardly even notice Franck's ingenious, strictly contrapuntal treatment of it each time in returns. Midori's performance of the sonata is both probing and intimate. What's more, the rarely performed Elgar work offers a singularly apt coupling that raises the entire recital to a very special level of distinction. Let's hope that this excellent violinist enjoys a smooth career from here on out. --David Hurwitz

An abundance of grace & beauty
Violinist Midori is very much in her element on this wonderful cd containing the Elgar Sonata in E-minor, coupled with the Franck A-major Sonata. She plays with an abundance of grace, beauty and elegance.
Her lilting tone in the Elgar is absolutely exquisite, with an arresting charm that is totally captivating. Very much the same could be said of the Franck sonata as well. The familiar fourth movement allegretto poco mosso is simply gorgeous violin playing, once again suggesting that a single track on a Midori cd is quite possibly worth the purchase price alone. As always, her technique is flawless and the sound provided her by the Sony engineers is pristine & well-balanced. I would certainly pay a princely sum to her Midori play a recital featuring the pieces recorded here. This Sony Classical compact disc is yet another triumph for one of the great musicians of our generation. Along with so many of her other outstanding releases, this Midori chamber recording will become a treasured addition in your cd library.

Description : Of Thee I Sing/Let 'Em Eat Cake was one of the leading recordings during the Gershwin CD revival of the late 1980s. Led by Gershwin expert Michael Tilson Thomas using some newly discovered materials, it resuscitated two nearly forgotten satires from the 1930s sung by casts who were better able to capture the spirit of the music than the opera stars who were in vogue at the time. Larry Kert (the original Tony in West Side Story) played goofy U.S. presidential candidate John P. Wintergreen, who decides to run his campaign on a theme of love. He promises to marry the winner of a beauty contest, only to reject her (played by Paige O'Hara) for secretary Mary Turner (played by cabaret singer Maureen McGovern), in great part because Mary can make corn muffins. Jack Gilford is his hapless vice president candidate Throttlebottom. The story is silly fun (who can forget the Supreme Court's question of "Which is more important, corn muffins or justice?") and the great songs include "Who Cares," "Love Is Sweeping the Country," and the title tune. The second disc features the follow-up musical, Let 'Em Eat Cake with the same principal characters plus a fiery revolutionary played by David Garrison. It's not as fun as Of Thee I Sing nor is its score as memorable ("More" is the only standard that emerged). But the two-disc set is an impressive achievement, and paved the way for the even more comprehensive and scholarly series of Nonesuch Gershwin recordings a few years later. --David Horiuchi

What a terrific recording. I am surprised that some enterprising producer hasn't mounted this tuneful and hilarious Gershwin musical (Of Thee I Sing) in this election year. And it is a crime that the CD has gone out of print (thank God I bought a copy in my free-spending days in the '80s!). If you can afford it at the current OOP prices, by all means go for it!

Feyer's CD is a must have
So I purchase my Nano and then easily transfer much of my "must have" music library to the 8 Mega Black Nano. The Nano makes me want to hear all my music again as I work out, etc. I ordered "must have" Feyer's Gershwin from Amazon and was lucky to get the Gershwin CD. If only they could remaster all his works onto CDs at a lower price than the $100 plus I paid. Feyer is a top addition and it reminds me of the Stanhope days and his music magic that I wish to briefly tell you.

In the latter 70s, the Stanhope weekends were a joy, buttressed by Feyer's music. He held court and the audience was captivated. He was an excellent pianist with excellent trills in the high octaves, and nice contrast with the lower ones. The Gershwin CD the piece "I Got Rhythm" reminds one of small flames jumping lightly on a log. So light, so elegant, so much in rhythm. I would take my "A" dates to the Stanhope, including my future wife of 20 plus years. After the Met Opera or ballet, I would take my dates to the Stanhope. Usually two Kier Royals, supper, wine, and dessert would accompany George's fine music. Such a rich repertory and bottomless request well that he knew with top piano skill!

Missing on the CD was his singing and funny remarks. I recall him playing `Thank Heavens For Little Girls"... they are so helpless, and then he would pick some women from the audience and repeat the word " helpless' and the everyone would laugh. My dates were the younger women in the Stanhope back then and he tended to look at my dates.....and made them feel like a princess

The Stanhope was a bit expensive but a classy place. With George, it was worth every penny. I think Gunnar ( spelling?) was the head waiter. They knew you and you did not have to ask for a certain drink as they knew your need before your request. Unlike today, waiters are more of errand boys to the kitchens. George also knew your favorites in songs.

One thing that is not obvious, despite my Ivy MBA and a good undergraduate degree, one does not learn in early years the basic American songs of Porter, Gershwin, etc. Some of my dates knew many of the words to these songs from their social events. Hence for me it was a pleasant discovery and made me grateful to the mastery of George. It opened one's appreciation to the very rich music heritage of America.

The CD in ADD format was very clear; no his; and, the accompanying musicians were well heard in CD. Enjoy this CD!

A+ Snare Drum Work!!!
This is a fantastic album. It's an absolute must for any student or enthusiast of drumming. The snare drum solos on this recording are executed flawlessly and serve as an excellent study reference filling a real void. Mr. Gauthreaux has obviously spent a lot of time working on his craft. There are some wonderful classics performed, including 'Three Camps', 'Downfall of Paris', and my favourite 'Grandfather's Clock'. The sound of the recording is also excellent and very "true" to the instruments used (love that Gladstone Snare). It's about time somebody recorded these solos - great job!!!!

Nothing Comes Close to Gershwin's Performance
There are literally hundreds of performances of Rhapsody in Blue available on CD. This one uses the 1925 piano roll made by Gershwin himself. Check out the running time. 13:43 compared to Bernstein's apathetic 16:20. George knew how he wanted Rhapsody to be played and he did it. Thank goodness for piano rolls or we'd be stuck with a very tinkly audio. Tilson Thomas drives his orchestra to keep up with his soloist. This isn't the Rhapsody you've heard all these years, this is the version that was meant to be heard. The truth is there aren't many contemporary pianists that can keep up with Gershwin's pall mall pacing; they're just not from the 20's Jazz Era (most are simply wonderful concert pianists). There is a story that Gershwin was traveling by train with his very close friend and great pianist himself, Oscar Levant. Oscar had the top berth, George had the lower (considered more desirable by train travelers). Gershwin commented, "You know Oscar, upper birth-lower birth, it the difference between greatness and genius." You don't need to be a musicologist to know who the genius was.
