| Description : | The piano quartet--one of music's many curious misnomers--relies on a particularly subtle interplay between its contrasting textures of strings and keyboard. The synergy of the four musicians on this CD (each a star on his respective instrument), as in their account of the Mozart piano quartets, creates a shared dynamic that brings the expressive depths that Brahms positively poured into this idiom. They've managed to develop a style of breathing together with a kind of lucidly organic inevitability. The first quartet (in G minor) exhales Brahms's empathetic engagement with the chamber music of Schubert (the piece marked his Viennese debut) but would have a profound impact on Arnold Schoenberg, who wrote a notable essay on it extolling "Brahms the progressive" and later scored it for full orchestra. There's a similarly Schubertian leisureliness to the Quartet in A, but in these musicians' hands, its length unfolds as a horn of plenty, fertile in its musical invention, with an especially magical lushness in the romantic "Nachtstück" slow movement. But the real emotional centerpiece here is the C Minor Quartet (also known as the Werther Quartet from its purported inspiration in Goethe's novel). Ax, Stern, Laredo, and Ma bring a concentrated power and broiling originality to their account, instilling its moments of anguish and harmonic dislocation with searingly tragic energy. The Andante in particular emerges as a sustained rhapsody as the musicians play off each other's phrasing to build a statement of majestic eloquence. --Thomas May |
| Reviews : { Rating: 4.5 out of 5 } | Beautiful, assured readings, but the G minor is a weak link I am a huge admirer of Isaac Stern the chamber musician, dating form his early days at Casals' postwar festivals in Prades and Puerto Rico to the late phase when he teamed up with Yo-Yo Ma and Emanuel Ax. No major label has given us a set of the three Brahms piano quartets to match this one in the decades since. The mesh of talents is very satisfying. When Brahms includes a piano in his chamber music, its voice dominates. After all, Brahms was a virtuoso pianist himself when young. The writing is so varied that it requires a thorough musician to carry it off, and Ax is such a musician. In that regard, these readings surpass the usual choice, which is to take a Piano trio and insert a viola. An ensemble as good as the Beaux Arts Trio cannot compete with a star like Ax, not to mention the other stars in his orbit. Having said that, there's a caveat. Brahms's piano quartets are dominated by the first in G minor, the one that Schoenberg orchestrated and that most concert programs include. You can't earn top honors without a really smashing reading, and this one isn't. The gypsy-flavored finale is too slow and foursquare, lacking in fire. Just sample the searing account led by Martha Argerich (DG) or Murray Perahia (Sony), and this one feels a bit sleepy. There's lack of fire in the A major Quartet, too, and too often Ax substitutes broad sweep for dynamism. But I don't want to cavil. These are very fine readings, and the individual musicianship is as good as it gets. Sony's sound, even without being refurbished, is also very attractive. |

| Reviews : { Rating: 4.0 out of 5 } | Danish, Norwegian and German songs Anyone considering this disc probably already has the Gramophone Award winning Grieg recital on DG, or mixed recitals like Diamonds in the Snow (Bonney on Decca), Black Roses (Kringelborn on Virgin). It has to be said that Bodil Arnesen isn't quite in the Otter or Bonney league yet. Nor is Sinding quite in the league of Grieg or Sibelius. However this is a fine recital and anything less than three stars would be churlish. The fact that Naxos, as earlier in Arnesen's Grieg recital, have provided original texts in Danish, Norwegian, New-Norwegian or German (as well as translations in English), at super-budget price, earns the fourth star. Timing 56:15. The only reason it doesn't get five stars is the presence of the Deutsche Grammophon Grieg recital by Otter in the catalogues (look for #37521, and avoid the reissue of half of that disc coupled with Berg, and neither with texts, in DG's mid-price Centenary Edition). However price is a factor and given the choice between 1 CD of Grieg from DG, and 2 CDs of Grieg and Sinding from Naxos, a lot of people will have no hesitation in going for the two Naxos discs. |

| Reviews : { Rating: 5.0 out of 5 } | Spirited performances of some hugely enjoyable music Chandos has subsequently recorded the complete cycle of Gade symphonies with Hogwood (and this one is no part of that cycle, mind), but as a taster of Gade's music this one will serve quite nicely, containing some of his most famous and best works - his early music is in fact generally more spirited and imaginative than his later works. Ths first symphony of 1842 is subtitled "Paa Sjølands fagre sletter" - "On the fair plains of Sjøland" - referring to one of the folk songs that is employed. Stylistically it is close to the music of Gade's friend and mentor Mendelssohn, and while not overly individual, it is thoroughly well-crafted, elegant and full of life - in short, a work that should delight anyone who enjoys the Mendelssohn symphonies (or even the Schumann or Berwald ones). The couplings are two of Gade's most famous works. Efterklang af Ossian was his first opus and his breakthrough. It is a superb work, with truly memorable melodic ideas developed and handled with utmost ingenuity. The Hamlet overture is a later work, again superbly crafted and inspired. The performances are lively and sensitive and the Danish National Radio Orchestra plays with tremendous commitment and panache. The sound is superb as well, well-balanced and very natural-sounding. In short, a hugely enjoyable and easily recommended disc. |

| Reviews : { Rating: 5.0 out of 5 } | The "other" great Danish tenor During the 1930s and `40s, Wagnerian tenor Lauritz Melchior was the most famous Danish tenor in the world, singing virtually every role Wagner ever wrote worldwide, but in Denmark during the same period a very different kind of tenor was flourishing: Aksel Schiøtz, with his light, silvery voice, high standards of musicianship, excellent command of lieder and wide popularity among his countrymen for his singing of Danish folk and art songs. All of this came to an abrupt end in the fall of 1946 when Schiøtz, suffering from severe headaches and impaired vocal control, was diagnosed with a brain tumor that had to be removed immediately. The operation saved his life but left one side of his face, and vocal muscles, paralyzed. Through sheer hard work he was able to com back, two years later, as a baritone, but though the phrasing and musicianship remained intact the voice no longer had its silvery bloom. He continued to perform and record as a baritone through the late 1950s, then became a teacher of voice and interpretation in Colorado before accepting a similar post in his native Denmark in 1969. He died ten years later. This, the last album in the Schiøtz series, contains all of his recordings of songs by the great composer Carl Nielsen, better-known internationally nowadays than he was in the 1930s and `40s. Schiøtz' readings, long considered classic, are here lovingly restored to their original pristine sound. The result is an incredible sense of intimacy created between performer and listener. The Danish engineer responsible for most of the Schiøtz recordings had one object in mind: to properly balance voice and piano or voice and orchestra, then let them perform as they would in a natural concert environment. None of the cramped, dry LP pressings we all became to familiar with were used here, or indeed in any of the volumes of this series; every single track was lovingly and meticulously restored in London's Abbey Road studios from mint-condition copies of the original 78s or brand-new transfers made from the original metal parts. The results are simply magical, creating a tremendous intimacy between the tenor and listener in a way that is hard to describe unless you hear it for yourself. A shame that most of these CDs are now hard to obtain, but I urge you to get them if you can! |
