| Reviews : { Rating: 4.5 out of 5 } | Must-have for "Ring" lovers! When Georg Solti and John Culshaw approached Deryck Cooke with a request to do an analysis of the various leitmotifs of Wagner's Ring cycle, the first completed recording of which they had recently completed for Decca, they agreed it would be a complex project. The idea that it would occupy a single LP record was quickly discarded due to the fact that Cooke would have to constantly retrace his way through the jungle of motifs and show their interrelatedness and so on. Eventually the form (which took up 2 1/2 LP's and the remainder was filled out by the Solti recordings of the Siegfried Idyll [in its original version] and the seldom-heard Kinderkatechismus -- get it if you can find it!) it took on was the most logical, with motifs grouped according to family resemblances and how they evolved one to another -- Ring family, Spear family, Nature family etc. It is now available on CD although the booklet that came with the LP version showed notated examples of every last motif and only some are shown with musical notation here. A small complaint for a magnificent set. If you love the Ring cycle, this makes an essential companion of which I believe Wagner would have approved. |

| Description : | Leonard Bernstein was full of surprises. A conductor often accused of hopeless self-indulgence, he responded intuitively to the classical aesthetic of Haydn, and no less to the early Romantic bravado of Schumann. In fact, these symphonies have never been better played or conducted than they are here. These are performances of high passion--they're either very fast or very slow--and extraordinary color and drama. Bernstein sticks faithfully to the composer's original, thick orchestrations but makes each symphony work through playing of unflagging clarity and chamber music-like balance. That this was all done live, in performances of such wide emotional range, is amazing. But amazing was what Bernstein did best. --David Hurwitz |
| Reviews : { Rating: 4.5 out of 5 } | Schumann for poets There is more in Bernstein's performances of Schumann's concerti than one could ever expect, given the myriad recordings of these remarkable works from a master of the ethos of the Romantic era. Bernstein's recordings are romantic, emotional, nuanced, precise, and really in the groove. In the LP era, I had recordings of these works by Bernstein that I loved. These are even better. The Vienna Phil. Quality conversion to digital. Rich harmonies. You find yourself wondering, how could anything be better than this? I have great respect for the Vienna Philharmonic and in these recordings they did themselves proud. Schumann for the late Twentieth Century is what these are. He lived an heroic/tragic, accomplished life. He encouraged his contemporaries, lead orchestras, understood the implications of the enormous changes of his era, rural to industrial, royal to egalitarian, old to young. Beautiful recordings. Don't miss these! |

| Reviews : { Rating: 4.5 out of 5 } | Surprisingly good! When I purchased this CD I expected an album of average performances and OK sound. What I got though was 25 superbly clear stereo tracks rendered by quite competent orchestras. Points of criticism here are minor ones. Six Beethoven excerpts and only one of Brahms; an example of his magnificent 4th Symphony being conspicuously absent. No actual liner notes, and the two pages of contents are printed in an exceedingly small font. Hearing these favorite strains whets the appetite for the complete works, so the job of a "sampler" is well-fulfilled here (not a criticism!). In summary, you will find this melange of edits from the VOX catalog most satisfying indeed! TOTAL RUNNING TIME: 79:02 Also recommended: 25 CLASSICAL DANCE FAVORITES is a lively collection of familiar music. |

| Reviews : { Rating: 5.0 out of 5 } | Sheer delight In a very crowded field, a recording of this Mendelssohnian tour de force has to be special to head the list - and this one is. The sheer, silky beauty of the Boston Symphony Orchestra is as otherwordly as Shakespeare's poetry; they are matched by the shimmering purity of Kathleen Battle's fluting soprano paired with the slightly warmer and equally lovely mezzo of Frederica von Stade in their "Spotted Snakes" song. As if this were not enough, Judi Dench sweeps away the competition with the wit and wisdom of her mellifluous narrative; she is such a characterful actress and cannot help bringing everything she does to life. There are other recommendable versions which include more of the melodramas whereby it is somewhat easier to piece together the action of the play, but there is certainly enough here to engage us in the drama and provide a complementary setting for this mercurial music. Ozawa judges tempi and phrasing perfectly with only one exception and it is a common flaw: the scurrying staccato strings which answer the evocative rising sequence of four chords right at the opening of the overture need to be as gossamer-light as fairies' wings, and although this is of course sweetly played by the Bostonians, no performance in my experience achieves the delicacy of John Nelson with the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris. That recording also gives us a lot more text with multiple actors and thus offers a slightly more complete and theatrical experience, but it is not as satisfying overall and this superbly recorded 1992 version on DG still leads the field musically. |

| Description : | Wonderful classical Music!!! |
| Reviews : { Rating: 5.0 out of 5 } | Another great entry in this series We have almost all the CDs in this series. They are all just wonderful. The biographies of the various musicians are very well-told, and you're exposed to a great selection of their music. I know enough about classical music to say that the selections are not always the most "obvious," i.e., you won't hear just the "greatest hits" of Mendelssohn here. The selections are also quite brief, except for his beautiful Violin Concerto played in full at the end (a nice performance of that, as far as my ears can tell). The story is quite inspiring and sad--he lived a full, but short, life, and seemed to be a lovely sort of man. Our whole family likes this and indeed all of the dozen+ CDs we've got in this series. |
