I fully embrace every enthusiastic five-star rating of the music recorded here. It's beautiful. I hoped, though, I could be spared the frustration of having Jarrett's Sniveling Whine once again corrupt an otherwise amazing listening experience. No such luck. I know, I know -- I should pay attention to the music, etc. I've been listening to Keith Jarrett for 25 years, even with the SW. This time I've just had enough. How does Jarrett expect anyone to overlook that intrusion time and time again? He's walked off stage because audience members were coughing too much. I'd bet if someone else started the SW during a concert he'd walk off for that too. At least I didn't try to follow the advice to "Call your wife or husband or lover in late at night and sit down and listen." As soon as the SW foolishness began, more than the recording would have been ruined on that night...... |

Not being a fan of violin in general (more of a piano/sax lover outside of my rock/metal world), I put this into my Wishlist here at Amazon, to think about it. Every time I listened to the clips, I wanted to buy it, but always paused. Then one day in my car, the yearning for something different (than my usual rock/metal etc) led me back to this CD. It is a great CD. His mastery of his instrument, along with his love for contemporary music and youthful take on classics are very uplifting. LOVE this CD, and again, I'm not a huge fan of the violin. He's great. I've told everyone I know: check out this music!!! |

The album was recorded in close collaboration with producer David Kahne (Regina Spektor, The Strokes, The Bangles, Sublime, and countless others) in New York City, and features a diverse and adventurous track listing of songs as interpreted by one of the world s great voices. Fleming, the superstar soprano known as "the people's diva," says of the songs on 'Dark Hope': "One of the ways that you keep people interested is by taking risks and what could be a greater risk than this?" Producer Kahne was a true collaborator during the recording process, driving most of the arrangements and pushing Fleming to learn how to sing all over again. Also joining Fleming on the album are her two daughters and sister, who sing backup on several songs. The album features a voice that's been called "superlative" (Denver Post) and "radiant" (Chicago Tribune). But Fleming says that for the recording of this album, "Singing in a small, acoustic booth, with a microphone that s very close, in this very intimate style, is the complete opposite of what I [usually] do." There were similarities to how she prepares for an opera role, however. Fleming points out that for each track on 'Dark Hope' "we found an interpretation that enabled the point of view to sound authentic coming from me. Every song has a story like that, so this whole idea of enacting or playing a role is doubly true for this music." Renée Fleming, a Fulbright Scholar and three-time Grammy award winner, is one of the world's most famous and accomplished vocalists. A New Yorker who made her professional opera debut in 1986 and her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1991, she has had star roles at great halls worldwide and last year was a featured performer at President Obama's Inaugural Celebration. Fleming has also had an interest in jazz since her college years at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, and has recorded jazz repertoire throughout her career including 'Haunted Heart', the lauded collaboration with pianist Fred Hersch and guitarist Bill Frisell. |

Overall, Closer is an amazing album. This album totally exceeded my expectations of him and his music. He is unlike any singer in this world. Josh Groban just keeps on improving even when we fans may think he reached his limit. All the music on this album is so strong and inspirational! For example, "My Confession" and "You Raise Me Up" give off an enchanting and rich tone of meaning in both its lyrics and music. His music reminds me not to take anything for granted. Even if I don't understand his non-English music, I can still feel the passion that he brings. When I listen to this album, it feels like I am taking one step "Closer" to him. |
