| Description : | In Game Change, John Heilemann and Mark Halperin, two of the country’s leading political reporters, use their unrivaled access to pull back the curtain on the Obama, Clinton, McCain, and Palin campaigns. Based on hundreds of interviews with the people who lived the story, Game Change is a reportorial tour de force that reads like a fast-paced novel. Character-driven and dialogue-rich, replete with extravagantly detailed scenes, it’s an intimate portrait of some of the most powerful and fascinating figures in American life—the occasionally shocking, often hilarious, ultimately definitive account of the campaign of a lifetime. |
| Reviews : { Rating: 3.0 out of 5 } | An Insiders' Look at Washington Politics and Campaigning Although I would have liked to read more about Sarah Palin, this book gave an insight into what it was like to be a female running for the office of the President of the U.S. It illustrated how the hopeful candidate has to put in 16 hour days and still appear fresh and competent after a long journey that does not seem to have an ending. It left it up to the reader's conclusion as to whether Bill Clinton was an asset or a pain-in-the-neck. Would Hillary have been better off without her husband's good intentions? Hillary Clinton defied the odds of the insiders and came back time after time to win primaries when she had all but been counted out. John Edwards was an also-ran because of his internal conflicts with his wife and his womanizing. He ended up willing to settle as the attorney-general in the new administration. John McCain's race for the White House was doomed when he chose Sarah Palin as his running mate, mainly due to the fact that the vetting process for Palin was incomplete and poorly organized. The 2008 race for the presidency was so successful for Barrack Obama, the first African American president, because he ran his campaign like a well-oiled machine, relying on the internet for small donations ($10) and an extremely well organized grass roots campaign. Obamas' expertise as a Chicago community organizer was a valuable experience that helped him run his smooth and popular campaign. I believe that "Game Change" will be a guide for political aspirants in the years to come. |

| Description : | Love blooms in the second novel in Nora Roberts's celebrated Bride Quartet series. As little girls MacKensie, Emma, Laurel, and Parker spent hours acting out their perfect make believe "I do" moments. Years later their fantasies become reality when they start their own wedding planning company to make every woman's dream day come true. With perfect flowers, delicious desserts, and joyful moments captured on film, Nora Roberts's Bride Quartet shares each woman's emotionally magical journey to romance. In Bed of Roses, florist Emma Grant is finding career success with her friends at Vows wedding planning company, and her love life appears to be thriving. Though men swarm around her, she still hasn't found Mr. Right. And the last place she's looking is right under her nose. But that's just where Jack Cooke is. He's so close to the women of Vows that he's practically family, but the architect has begun to admit to himself that his feelings for Emma have developed into much more than friendship. When Emma returns his passion—kiss for blistering kiss—they must trust in their history…and in their hearts. |
| Reviews : { Rating: 4.0 out of 5 } | Roses and roses and .... Roses. I'm adding onto a previous review I expressed on this book. This novel is filled with information about roses and flowers, etc. And if you'd like to learn about the sujbect, then this book is for you! Nora Roberts goes into great depth about all the different types of roses and how they all make the main character feel. Another thing. These books seem to use rough language here and there, I guess to portray how "real guys" talk or how a group of four women would talk when getting together for a gab fest(a la Sex in the City or Girlfriends)? Let's say that's how she views groups of friends. That they talk in a really raw, vulgar way about the opposite sex. On the other hand, she creates a polar oppostite lifestyle for them. I mean, really, the women and men's setup is a pretty idealized way to live. They all absolutely "LOVE" what they are doing (I think this was mentioned nineteen times) while getting rich and have a built in housekeeper who has no other function other than to serve to their food and emotional needs with no apparent personal life of her own. Four friends live and work together with a disciplined business, but can drop a night's work with the drop of a hat if a friend needs to have a "girl's night". Ah, the glamorourous life of the singletons. Give me a break. Nora Roberts has a quick paced type of writing that can be very appealing and fun to read. Her dialogue is often witty and fast paced as well. But, it seems these first two installments of the Bride Quartet are a little too quick. As if she's trying to rush all the words out on the page and didn't check to see how they sounded when read aloud. Honestly, I couldn't really tell the difference between the four female characters. Whether one is more sensitive than the other, or one is more perfection oriented. She had to literally write that Parker is "in charge" and that Emma is the caring one. But, I somehow wouldn't have have inferred that if she hadn't spelled it out for me. That's the thing that happens when you have multiple characters in a novel. I found it difficult to sometimes distinguish one character from the next. They all seem to blend together. If any of the characters had some trademark personality traits, or ways of talking...but they all seemed to be the same to me. That's why, even though I always finish her novels, I felt this novel wasn't as good. |

| Description : | Not your typical boring diet book, this is a tart-tongued, no-holds-barred wakeup call to all women who want to be thin. With such blunt advice as, "Soda is liquid Satan" and "You are a total moron if you think the Atkins Diet will make you thin," it's a rallying cry for all savvy women to start eating healthy and looking radiant. Unlike standard diet books, it actually makes the reader laugh out loud with its truthful, smart-mouthed revelations. Behind all the attitude, however, there's solid guidance. Skinny Bitch espouses a healthful lifestyle that promotes whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, and encourages women to get excited about feeling "clean and pure and energized." |
| Reviews : { Rating: 3.0 out of 5 } | Eat Simply and Reclaim Your Energy. These books are right on! Why I Read this Book: Health is a constant area of study for me. These women have done the research and have a simple lifestyle that works. I've experienced it. Review: I know what you're thinking..."What on earth is Reading For Your Success doing posting a review on a book with a title like this?" How could that possibly be related to true health or success? Well, as my mom taught me early on not to judge a book by it's cover, it took me a couple years but I finally got past this one. And I'm glad I did. The books written by Rory and Kim have turned out to be incredible wealths of information. Useful, empowering tools that can dramatically change the way you feel and look-as they have for me. Not to mention they're about as entertaining as a nutrition book (or any book) can be. After some deliberation, I decided to post the review. I wrote this based on having just read Skinny Bastard but it fits just as well for this book's testy older sister, Skinny Bitch, too. They're equals, just one for the ladies in your life and one for the guys. The message is the same (which I'll get to in a minute). After reading them, I believe the Skinny books are one of the most useful and easy to digest books on health that I've seen. In Defense of Food takes the cake but these gals are a relatively close second. They obviously chose these titles to ruffle some feathers-and you know what they say, it takes something out of the ordinary to really break a pattern. This book will likely disturb you, maybe even disgust you, but in an informative good way. It's a very in your face way of saying something pretty simple-eat your fruits and veggies and stay away from just about everything else. That's the skinny. This approach to eating first hopped on my radar at a Tony Robbins Unleash The Power Within event. He spent one full 12-hour day dedicated to energy, health and vitality. After 30 years of research he found that the diet most consistent with high energy, low disease and longevity is one that involves nothing but whole grains, fruits and a lot of veggies, especially the leafy green type. After two more years of self study and a few personal experiments on my body, I must say the data is pretty compelling. And this is coming from a guy who didn't use to be able to have a meal without some form of meat on my plate. I will spare you all the details for now but there is plenty of science behind this stuff both in the 1,000+ sources these girls cite and the books listed below. "But what about getting enough protein??" This is the first thing 99.9% of people ask in response to someone who labels themselves as a vegetarian or a vegan (which I am neither). If I had a nickle for every time I heard that, I'd be laying on a hammok in Tahiti somewhere. This was my major limiting belief before switching to mostly plants and I believe it is the biggest roadblock to sustainable eating for most folks. Guys especially are convinced that they need a ton of protein to get through life and especially if they want to pack on a bunch of muscle. I couldn't have agreed more. I was as skeptical as they come. So what did I do? I decided to test it. One of my goals last year was to put on a few pounds of muscle-5 to be exact. So I picked a pretty rigorous program, P90X. I did the full program-13 weeks straight (I highly recommend it by the way-perfect workout for at home too). But I decide that I wouldn't eat any meat and next to no dairy during the program just to see what was possible. I set out to gain 5 pounds of muscle, and at the end of week 13 I had put on 9.8! I was sold. Society has brainwashed us on this whole protein myth. Try it for yourself if you don't believe it. And don't worry, even if you stop your protein shakes and 20 oz of white chicken breast a day, you will still get your fair share of protein from all the things no one pays attention to-legumes, veggies and fruit. What are you afraid of anyway-suffering from protein deficiency? Have you ever even heard of that problem in our country? If you're stuggling with what "your plate after meat" will look like, take advantage of the dozens of delicious recipes in this book. You'll never know the animal is even missing. And if my little anecdote wasn't enough, you would not believe the list of vegan olympians, pro athletes (including NFL players) and body builders that these girls list. There must be a full page. There is comfort in numbers-especially big, fit and strong ones. Here are the main things to keep in mind: 1. Keep your food sources simple: Think about where most food and meat really comes from. It is scary if you ask yourself too many questions. If you can pull it from the ground, it's not too hard to figure out where it came from. The graphic descriptions of the sources of some of our foods and meats will make your stomach churn. 2. Trust no one: We spend our lives reliant on others for health advice-doctors, commecials, FDA, food industry. Every one of these either has a huge conflict of interest or has little to no nutritional training. The only one to trust is yourself. Do your own research and know exactly what you're putting in your body and where it come from. You'll find whatever program you choose much easier to stick to if you understand what's behind it. 3. Alkalinity=Health and Energy: The pH level in your body has a great deal to do with your health and energy levels. Your body thrives in an alkaline environment. Most fruits and veggies (especially leafy greens) are incredibly alkaline. Dairy and meats are very acidic. According to the studies, in an acid environment your cells retain fat to protect themselves from the acidity. Diseases and viruses also thrive in acidic environments. Why do you think most cancer patients are told to adopt a vegan diet? 4. Sugar is the devil: This shouldn't be much of a surprise. The stuff jacks your body up like crazy and leads to a ton of health problems, not the least of which is major weight gain. Avoid added sugar (especially high-fructose corn syrup) whenever possible, and stick to the natural stuff like stevia, molasses, honey or agave nectar when you need a fix. 5. Don't drown yourself in protein: I think this was covered plenty above. Ask yourself why you believe you need so much protein. Who taught you this? Have you ever tested whether or not it's true? 6. Moderation in moderation: This is my favorite. While these girls are hard asses about what to put into your body, they spend plenty of time letting you know that everything in moderation is crucial. Including moderation. Don't beat yourself up if you don't follow everything perfectly-no matter what you're tackling, life's just not that fun when you totally stick to the rules. When in doubt, just adopt Pareto's famous 80/20 rule. Do what you know is right for your body 80% of the time and the other 20% just go with the flow. Before you know it you'll be so accustomed to and enjoying that 80% lifestyle, that it will become the norm and flow of the rest of it. So what do you say you take the time to explore your body a bit? It's our most magnificent and powerful tool. When nourished properly it can be unstoppable. Test some things out and let me know what you learn. And of course, moderate your moderation. What have you learned while exploring a mostly-plant diet? What surprised you? How did you feel? | Description : | A tribe is any group of people, large or small, who are connected to one another, a leader, and an idea. For millions of years, humans have been seeking out tribes, be they religious, ethnic, economic, political, or even musical (think of the Deadheads). It’s our nature. Now the Internet has eliminated the barriers of geography, cost, and time. All those blogs and social networking sites are helping existing tribes get bigger. But more important, they’re enabling countless new tribes to be born—groups of ten or ten thousand or ten million who care about their iPhones, or a political campaign, or a new way to fight global warming. And so the key question: Who is going to lead us? The Web can do amazing things, but it can’t provide leadership. That still has to come from individuals— people just like you who have passion about something. The explosion in tribes means that anyone who wants to make a difference now has the tools at her fingertips. If you think leadership is for other people, think again—leaders come in surprising packages. Consider Joel Spolsky and his international tribe of scary-smart software engineers. Or Gary Vaynerhuck, a wine expert with a devoted following of enthusiasts. Chris Sharma leads a tribe of rock climbers up impossible cliff faces, while Mich Mathews, a VP at Microsoft, runs her internal tribe of marketers from her cube in Seattle. All they have in common is the desire to change things, the ability to connect a tribe, and the willingness to lead. If you ignore this opportunity, you risk turning into a “sheepwalker”—someone who fights to protect the status quo at all costs, never asking if obedience is doing you (or your organization) any good. Sheepwalkers don’t do very well these days. Tribes will make you think (really think) about the opportunities in leading your fellow employees, customers, investors, believers, hobbyists, or readers. . . . It’s not easy, but it’s easier than you think. |
| Reviews : { Rating: 4.0 out of 5 } | Who's Leading Your Tribe (Industry) [...], autobiographical prose I know, I am little late on this one but just became a member of Seth Godin's Tribe, literally. But before I go any further, the book is a bit thin on substance and lofty in idea. It took me less than 45 minutes to read and is not as sophisticated as I had hoped. Ironically, it stirs thought without 'leading' readers to a soap box-like platform and for that I give the quick-read 4-stars. Godin uses quick examples to discuss marketing and industry in an internet-driven society. He claims the most substantive change will come from tribes; a group of people connected to a leader and an idea. He touches on industry adjustments, triumphs and failure to lead, event and evolve. Through internet's global reach and social connectivity, ordinary individuals can influence large communities and emerge a leader. However, anyone and everyone won't become a leader; most are kept from realizing their potential by fear of criticism and frankly, fear of being fired. This especially rings true in corporations. Although, I found few critics of the book, some argue that in a weaken economy, Godin's ideas could be a formula for firing, consequently proving his point. Godin's Tribes drives home one fundamental principle, that change isn't made by asking permission, change is made by asking forgiveness, later. Should be handled with care, many companies are not supportive of true risk - reward initiatives. With that said: calling all visionaries, industry strategist, marketing trailblazers and even the charismatic, idea-maker from the cube next door. See, traditionally marketers led business strategy but lately many lack vision. Many marketer's are still categorizing consumers into tidy boxes like "general market" - based on stereotypes and surface demographics. This is dusty brand management marketing. Godin argues that mass marketing is dead and any person can significantly move a crowd, share ideas and influence behaviors. It takes c-level support to run inventive risk. In some instances, the lack of change will not only impact big business but devastate entire industries. Godin references the record industry; they hurried along, day-to-day, business as usual with a few minor adjustments. A decade flew by, the music industry held tight their last big idea - music videos. And then one night, while all the execs lay sleep in Manhattan, Steve Job rallied the tribesman and armed them with Ipods. The rest is recent history. Well, Seth didn't quite put it that way...but you get the picture. With that example, I was forced to reflect on my professional experience in branded entertainment. My primary focus has been radio. Now, I wouldn't refer to my role as a tribe leader (by any stretch of the imagination) but I love the challenge of identifying a trend, collaborating with development and delivering "new" on a calculated-risk platter. Exciting! Still far from tribe-leadership. More often than not, those characteristics allowed me to carve out a successful niche. So, I love change and innovation, that's where the passion dwells - regardless of industry. People are attracted to change and seek tribe-leadership from those who promote new beginnings, ask President Barack Obama. However, some industries fight change to death; usually due to lack of vision and tribe leadership. The Record and Radio industry rely on each other's success. Radio is scrambling to compete with new media, instead of invent. Invention is much harder than competition and far more rewarding. It requires mammoth change to industry-mindset, management, even ownership and sometimes existence. From my own experience, I've seen a nation of radio stations attempt to fill their internet slice with poorly branded websites, wonder widgets, lack-luster content and plain-old streaming. All completely void of any inventive thought. I have seen a few examples of clever contesting, clever not inventive. disclaimer one: Because of my closeness to the industry i feel the need to say, no single radio owner/operator, regardless of size, deserves the weight of an entire industry's flub. Let's face it, most industry's are not making the cut. No tribe leader. WHO IS LEADING THE TRIBE? Meanwhile, corporate radio has switched from community-driven focus to corporate programmed templates, where city-to-city there are no defined tribe characteristics. Each city holds the same formatted stations, same songs, and same identity. No tribe distinctions and no tribe membership or loyalty. The programming strategy is strictly limited to targeting simple demographics (age, race and income). Radio's defining characteristic and touted capability is its "community connection", it would be hard to find someone to disagree, that radio spent the last decade de-connecting from its following (community connections). This is not news. Many choose to sheepwalk through their remaining years in radio. Those inventive, will simply find another space to tribe. Disclaimer two: Syndication, in concept is NOT a diluting factor or the cause. Many of those syndicated show hold a significant place in radio as community connectors. Nor do I believe simple programming fixes can evolve the industry. Radio has to change the way we do business and invest in creative minds, allow risks and promote inventive-thinking. Community can be local or global, shared ideas, beliefs and experiences etc... Radio the self-proclaimed champion of community has lost its tribe. The definition of community evolved, radio didn't and lost connectivity. In that space, an opportunity arose, web 2.0 tribe. Unfortunately, radio like its record industry sister is crumbling. Right now the lack of tribe leadership has forced the industry, to only focus on the next `spot and dot' media buy. In attempt, to keep lights on - bankruptcy at bay, imagination and risk sink to the bottom of priorities. In the words of Seth Godin, Who's leading your tribe? Visit my website: [...] |

| Description : | From the bestselling author of The Know-It-All comes a fascinating and timely exploration of religion and the Bible. Raised in a secular family but increasingly interested in the relevance of faith in our modern world, A.J. Jacobs decides to dive in headfirst and attempt to obey the Bible as literally as possible for one full year. He vows to follow the Ten Commandments. To be fruitful and multiply. To love his neighbor. But also to obey the hundreds of less publicized rules: to avoid wearing clothes made of mixed fibers; to play a ten-string harp; to stone adulterers. The resulting spiritual journey is at once funny and profound, reverent and irreverent, personal and universal and will make you see history's most influential book with new eyes. Jacobs's quest transforms his life even more radically than the year spent reading the entire Encyclopedia Britannica for The Know-It-All. His beard grows so unruly that he is regularly mistaken for a member of ZZ Top. He immerses himself in prayer, tends sheep in the Israeli desert, battles idolatry, and tells the absolute truth in all situations - much to his wife's chagrin. Throughout the book, Jacobs also embeds himself in a cross-section of communities that take the Bible literally. He tours a Kentucky-based creationist museum and sings hymns with Pennsylvania Amish. He dances with Hasidic Jews in Brooklyn and does Scripture study with Jehovah's Witnesses. He discovers ancient biblical wisdom of startling relevance. And he wrestles with seemingly archaic rules that baffle the twenty-first-century brain.Jacobs's extraordinary undertaking yields unexpected epiphanies and challenges. A book that will charm readers both secular and religious, The Year of Living Biblically is part Cliff Notes to the Bible, part memoir, and part look into worlds unimaginable. Thou shalt not be able to put it down. |
| Reviews : { Rating: 4.5 out of 5 } | Too clinical This book reads like a long magazine article and doesn't really embrace the title. A journey of faith shouldn't be an excuse to get a publishing house contract for a book... which pretty much sums this book up: "I am a writer who needs to do something clever to get a book deal." Pretty sure AJ nor I learned much in this process and time might be better spent reading other books. Highly recommend 'A Walk Across America' by Peter Jenkins as a better year of soul searching. Oldie but goodie. Pretty sure AJ's dad will rate me as unhelpful. |
